Bottom Line

The 34-room Tara Lodge is a modern, friendly boutique in a leafy residential area of Belfast within walking distance of the city center. Rooms are contemporary yet homey, and don't scrimp on amenities -- especially in the higher-end rooms. Modern bathrooms too are well equipped, featuring extra fluffy towels and luxury toiletries. Free Wi-Fi and on-site parking are a big plus, but spaces are not guaranteed. Despite its location street noise has been reported, so if you're after quiet rather than leafy surrounds the same distance from city center and at similar rates, look up the Radisson Blu Hotel.

Scene

Friendly, modern boutique

Converted from a church hall in 1998, the Tara Lodge is an intimate and friendly boutique located between terrace houses on a leafy residential Belfast street. The reception area's bespoke interior design is playful and contemporary with the odd glitzy touch, whilst maintaining a homey and welcoming feel. Hallways are clean, bright, and functional with the occasional funky fixture injecting a little character. Being a small hotel, the mood is relaxed with a pleasant personal touch, and so attracts both business guests and weekending tourists keen to avoid the anonymous chain experience, as well as the hustle and bustle of Belfast city center.

Location

Leafy residential setting a 15-minute walk from central Belfast

Tara Lodge is located on a leafy residential street in the Queen's Quarter neighborhood of Belfast, a 15-minute walk south from the city center. The Queen's University is five minutes away on foot, as are the Belfast Botanical Gardens. The nearest train station is Botanic, a block away, while the boutiques and coffee shops of Belfast's 'Style Mile' of Lisburn Road is a five-minute walk away. Belfast International Airport is about half an hour by car.

Rooms

Smart yet homey rooms with free Wi-Fi and luxury toiletries

Rooms are smart and welcoming with patterned fabrics and homey oak furnishings. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi, while modern charcoal-toned bathrooms provide large, fluffy towels and luxury toiletries. The more spacious Signature Rooms have cityscape views and the hills beyond as well as Nespresso coffeemakers, GHD hair straighteners, and surround sound Bluetooth speakers. Although rooms are double-glazed, street noise does seem to be an issue in some rooms.

Features

On-site parking and free Wi-Fi

A cooked a la carte breakfast is served each morning (included in the rate) and although there is no on-site dining, the hotel will accommodate for guests bringing food and drink from outside. A cozy lounge is open to guests with a fireplace and book shelves (though somewhat short on books) and a DVD library is also available. Parking can also be found on-site and free of charge (though fills up quickly), and Wi-Fi is available throughout.
