Bottom Line

This property has probably one of the most striking locations of all of the chain’s hotels -- except maybe for the Parador de Granada. With a cliff-top setting offering gorgeous views of the rugged Mediterranean coast; a large pool overlooking the ocean; and easy access to a beautiful (but busy) beach, this could be one of the top hotels in Costa Brava. However, while some find room decor charmingly traditional Mediterranean, others find it downright old-fashioned. Also, the restaurant is overpriced (though it serves a delicious breakfast), and there’s a fee for parking. Nevertheless, for many the views will be well worth the somewhat uninspired rooms and the high rates.

Scene

A quiet hotel popular among couples of all ages

Parador de Aiguablava makes the most of its wonderful cliff-top location. Most common spaces and the vast majority of rooms offer great views of the rugged Costa Brava coast. Overall the hotel could use some updates, especially when it comes to room decor, as the style is somewhat dated with only a few contemporary touches. The lobby is a large, bright space with huge floor-to-ceiling windows on two sides, a couple of seating areas, and a shop with souvenirs and clothes. Outside, guests -- mostly couples -- take in the view from either the cafe or the pool, both of which were built on the hillside overlooking beautiful Aiguablava Beach. The property is mostly quiet even during peak season, but the beach can get busy, as it is one of the top stretches of sand in the area.

Location

Atop a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean

The hotel is perched atop a cliff directly above a beautiful little beach that can be reached on foot. This locale offers striking ocean views, and a peaceful setting that few other hotels in the area have. There isn’t much to do around the hotel, so having a car is mandatory for those who want to explore the area or even eat out. The town of Begur -- home to many historic sites, restaurants and bars -- is a quick drive away. The property’s central location in Costa Brava allows for easy access to dozens of gorgeous little coves, beaches, and historic towns. Girona is about an hour away; Barcelona can be reached by car in just over 1.5 hours.

Rooms

Spacious and bright, but featuring somewhat uninspired decor

The hotel offers 83 spacious rooms, including Doubles that can sleep up to three guests, Junior Suites, and Accessible Rooms. The vast majority of units feature furnished balconies or terraces offering striking ocean views -- though rooms facing south get more light and have better views. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, minibars, hotel-brand toiletries, and free Wi-Fi. Decor is a little uninspired, with a somewhat bland style and only some contemporary touches. Bathrooms are clean and feature shower/tub combos -- but many some are in need of an update.

Features

A great pool, an average (and expensive) restaurant, and a fitness center with a sauna

The hotel has a number of solid on-site amenities, including a fitness center complete with a sauna; parking for a fee, and a couple of bars with outdoor seating and views. The pool is one of the hotel’s best features, as it was built right on the hillside and offers striking views of the Mediterranean. The restaurant has wall-to-wall windows offering panoramic views, and serves an outstanding (yet expensive) breakfast buffet. However, the rest of the meals are average at best for the price, and the dinner menu could use a few more options. The hotel also offers a restaurant by the beach with a good selection of fish dishes, and cocktails at night. There are five meeting rooms in the hotel, the largest of which can seat up to 120 guests.
