Aiguaclara Hotel

"Made with love" is the owners’ motto for this property -- and it shows. This charming boutique is housed in a beautiful colonial-style mansion first built in 1866 by a wealthy local who made his fortune in Cuba. The current owners, Clara and Joan, have kept some of the gorgeous original architectural details of the building, including the doors, the traditional tiled floors, and a wrought-iron gate that still shows the original owner’s initials. Decor is eclectic and fun, with a mix of well-maintained antiques and restored furniture that makes the property feel homey and cozy, and shows great attention to detail. Despite being a historic property guests have access to modern conveniences, such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and heated towel racks. Both common spaces and rooms have a romantic, relaxed vibe that makes this boutique a favorite among couples. The restaurant, with fun music nights, tasty candle-lit dinners, and central location in Begur is a destination unto itself.

Aiguaclara is located on a narrow one-way street in a quiet part of Begur’s historic center. There are plenty of beautiful colonial- and traditional-style homes around, some of which can be visited. The pedestrian area -- home to historic sites, shops, restaurants and bars -- is a short walk away, and the Castle of Begur, located atop a hill, can be reached on foot. There are several beautiful coves, beaches, and medieval towns within a short drive. Girona is an hour drive away.

The hotel features 10 individually decorated rooms with antiques, furniture restored by the owners themselves, and vintage pieces. All units are different in size and layout, but all are spacious, bright, and charming. Most have small sitting areas with at least a table and two chairs, and Junior Suites feature a separate sitting area with a sofa bed. Flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, heated towel racks, and DVD players are standard amenities. Bathrooms vary in size, but most have pedestal sinks and beautiful traditional floor tiles. A few of the rooms have either a furnished balcony or a small terrace. Aside from the 10 rooms, the property offers a two-bedroom, one-bath suite complete with a living room and a large terrace with village views. There are no mini-fridges or minibars in any of the rooms, but there is a large shared fridge where guests can store drinks and food.

Everything here was designed with the idea of making the stay as relaxing as possible. Guests can have a quiet evening at the hotel’s lounge, with comfy seating and a collection of loaner DVDs, CDs, and books. The honesty bar features drinks, sweet bites, an espresso machine, and cozy decor. On warm nights the patio turns into the guests’ preferred meeting spot, and the restaurant’s outdoor area fills with guests and locals alike drawn by the mellow music, tasty menu, and romantic vibe. At least once a week the restaurant offers music nights, which many claim are a must in Begur. Freebies such as Wi-Fi, beach towels and toys, and a solid breakfast add value. On-site parking is available for a fee.
