This 14-room boutique hotel found on the outskirts of Bath is charming and quiet due to its more residential location. Built into the first red-brick home constructed in Bath -- by Queen Victoria's photographer no less -- the building's 19th-century history is very much reflected in the hotel's traditional English decor. Each room is themed around a famous British writer, with a teddy bear mascot to match. The seven acres of gardens surrounding the property are gorgeous, and there’s a footpath that leads to town. (It's a hike, but a lovely one.) There’s no restaurant, pool, or business center, not unexpected at this type of small, quaint property. That being said, there is free Wi-Fi and free parking, and the staff serves a delicious daily continental breakfast and can mix you a drink to enjoy on the terrace.
Scene
A quiet escape with privacy and personal attention from staff
Everything about this hotel is small in scale but grand in comfort. The check-in desk is literally that…a classic wooden desk with flowers on it and a guest book nearby. You feel more as if you're entering someone's home than a hotel. Accordingly, guests are treated more like friends of the family than patrons. There are lovely common areas that include a large terrace area with wrought-iron furniture overlooking the grounds and many wooden seating areas and loungers throughout the gardens. There’s also a richly decorated interior drawing room complete with a leather couch, heavy drapes, and a marble fireplace with an antique mantle clock on display. Guests are encouraged to take advantage of these spaces with afternoon tea or a cocktail. The crowd tends to be more adult, as the vibe is relaxed and mature.
Location
A 10-minute drive outside of Bath proper in a lovely residential setting
Located about a 10-minute drive outside of Bath, this property is in a lovely residential neighborhood with gorgeous views of the area. There are seven acres of plush private gardens surrounding Tasburgh House, which also lead down to Kennet and Avon Canal. Guests can walk a footpath along the canal that leads to Bath in about 20 to 25 minutes. Also nearby via car are Alice Park, Bath Abbey, the Roman Baths, and the University of Bath.
Rooms
Classically decorated and uniquely themed rooms
Every room in this boutique hotel has decor that reflects the property's Victorian-era roots. There are plenty of floral patterns, as well as traditional accents such as canopies, ruffled curtains, and throw pillows. No two rooms are the same, and what you get depends on what you book. All the rooms are themed, meaning that you could end up in the Dickens, Wordsworth, Austen, or Bronte room -- all cute nods to English literary history. While some rooms have showers only, others also have tubs. Whatever bathroom configuration you get, the water pressure is fabulous. (A rarity in older buildings!) The beds are super comfy and the quiet surroundings help guests enjoy a good night's sleep. As far as modern amenities, there are flat-screen TVs (some larger than others), hairdryers, and electric teakettles.
Features
Themed teddy bears, loaner Wellies, and free continental breakfast
There are custom teddy bears all over this hotel. (It's kind of their thing.) The bears in each room also reflect the aforementioned British literary themes, with many seen reading the classics. Guests don't need to worry about mucking up their shoes while exploring the gorgeous grounds. Tasburgh House has a closet full of Wellies to borrow so that even rain won't thwart enjoyment of the lush gardens. There is a free continental breakfast -- which you can upgrade to a hot cooked breakfast for a fee -- and if you have a group that books all 14 rooms, the staff is open to scheduling dinner service or a barbecue on the terrace. Free Internet is available throughout the hotel and there’s free parking right on the premises.
