Bottom Line
The upper-middle-range Oldfields House is a bed-and-breakfast set in a classic Victorian house located about a 10 to 15 minute walk to the heart of Bath. Decor is largely traditional -- and sometimes dated -- but homey and full of character. The property's 16 rooms vary significantly in size and style, from tiny Single Rooms to the more spacious Four-Poster Room with a fireplace and whirlpool tub. All rooms have flat-screen TVs with DVD players, coffee and tea service, and free Wi-Fi. A decent -- and free -- cooked English breakfast is served daily and includes smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. As an alternative, Brook Guesthouse offers a similar vibe but a slightly more boutique-y feel.

Homey bed-and-breakfast in classic Victorian home
Oldfields House is situated in a classic, four-story Victorian house built with the honey-colored stone used throughout Bath. The bed-and-breakfast is far more guest house than hotel, thanks to its domestic touches, like the property's yard. There's no standard lobby (or elevator); instead, guests open the front door to find a long hallway and a stairway finished with dark green patterned carpeting and cream-colored walls with white wainscoting and trim. A door near the stairs leads to a small reception area. The property's main common areas include a living-room like lounge and a breakfast room, both of which have traditional, though somewhat dated, decor such as layered floral drapes or pinstriped red-and-white upholstery paired with dark green carpeting and damask wallpaper. The property is nicely kept, though, and certainly offers more character than most standard hotels. Oldfields is a good choice for tourists who want homey, intimate accommodations but don't mind staying slightly outside of the city center for a price break. With mostly double rooms, lots of couples stay here, though single rooms make this good for solo travelers too.
Location
On busy road, about a 10 to 15 minute walk to heart of Bath
The Oldfields House is situated on a busy main road that runs into Bath from Radstock and Wells. While the immediate area is fairly residential, guest can walk to the heart of Bath in just 10 to 15 minutes. The Bath Spa railway station is just a three-minute drive or a 15-minute walk, and Bristol Airport is about 35 minutes away by car. Heathrow and London are about a two-hour drive, depending on traffic. Limited free on-site parking is available.
Rooms
Individually decorated rooms with traditional style and modern amenities -- but some issues
The individually decorated guest rooms, which include singles and doubles, vary vastly in decor, size, and style. Furniture and even the color scheme is different in each room, but most offer a tasteful take on traditional style. Wood desks and wardrobes and carpeted floors are common, as are neutral colors with brighter accents in red or purple. Several guests have made note of the comfort of the beds. Bathrooms tend to be neutral but contemporary.
The lower-category rooms can be small with tiny bathrooms and somewhat underwhelming decor. One single room has a beige carpet, white walls, black-and-white striped accent walls, and white laminate furniture. But other rooms can feel more upscale with fireplaces, sitting areas, and vintage wood furniture. The Four-Poster Bed Rooms are particularly nice, and also have whirlpool tubs. Some room decor can feel dated and guests occasionally note wear-and-tear.
Rooms include flat-screen TVs with DVD players, free Wi-Fi, and coffee/tea service, while bathrooms include hairdryers and toiletry dispensers and either shower stalls or combo showers and tubs. Rooms do not have mini-fridges. Most, but not all, have AC, and guests have occasionally complained about issues with the hot water or with patchy Wi-Fi. Some traffic noise can be expected in street-facing rooms.
Features
Outdoor sitting areas and free English breakfast, but few other amenities
Like many smaller bed-and-breakfasts, this one has limited extra property features -- there's no restaurant, bar, or wellness facilities, for example. Common areas include a homey lounge area and a well-manicured yard surrounded by trees and finished with a few little sitting areas. Oldfields does offer a free and decent cooked English breakfast, which includes smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. There's also free parking, but it's small with limited spaces (the hotel can provide a permit for street parking if needed). There's a computer for guest use, free Wi-Fi, and a DVD collection on loan to guests.
