Bottom Line

One Three Nine
Bath is a high-end bed-and-breakfast set in a large Victorian house on a hill overlooking the center of Bath. Spotless interiors have a fresh contemporary finish throughout, with 10 individually styled rooms varying
in size and character. In-room amenities include nice touches such as Molten Brown products and fresh milk for coffee, while some have four-poster beds and hot tubs. Overall,
despite the uphill hike from Bath center, which might not be for everyone, it's one of the finest
bed-and-breakfasts in the city. If it's booked, the Villa Magdala is another great bed-and-breakfast worth considering.

Scene

Deluxe bed-and-breakfast with weatherworn Victorian facade and immaculate interiors

Formerly known as
Leighton House, One Three Nine is housed in a fine Victorian residence built in
1873, perched on a hill with views over the city of Bath. While its period facade has become somewhat
weatherworn over the years, inside is a different matter -- everything is
bright, modern, and impeccably presented with fresh flowers, pristine
floral-patterned wallpaper, and immaculately clean carpets throughout. Eliza and
James, who run the hotel, provide guests with a warm welcome that includes a drink, and are usually on-hand for info and advice. The ambience is intimate
and serene, with a pleasant lounge providing a place to unwind against a backdrop of classical music and a view of the well-tended grounds of
tidy lawns, potted lavender, and sculpted shrubbery.

Location

Residential hilltop location with views over Bath, which is within a 15-minute walk

The hotel is set
on a hill in a residential area overlooking the city of Bath to the north. It's
a 15-minute walk to the city center, and the main tourist attractions, including the Thermae Spa and Roman Baths, but the return trip is mostly uphill -- some guests say the views are worth it, but the climb might not be for everyone. Spa Bath main train station is also at the bottom of the hill,
about 10 minutes away on foot. Guests with cars will find
the hotel conveniently located -- a few minutes from the A36 exit.

Rooms

Fresh, bright, and individually styled -- some with four-poster beds and hot tubs

Each of the 10 rooms is individually decorated in fresh contemporary styling that varies
from smart, neutral tones to more flamboyant patterns and vibrant palette. Most
rooms are spacious, with plenty of natural light from large windows. Some
overlook the gardens, and others the street -- though the Queensize Double is
rather small. All rooms include tea- and coffee-making facilities with
fresh milk, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with digital free view, and DVD players, with a good movie
library available. All rooms have comfortable Hypnos beds, as well as Molton Brown
bath products, while some Superior Rooms include four-poster beds, jetted tubs, and fluffy robes -- one even has an in-room roll-top bathtub. Overall, rooms are quiet, but there have
been complaints of poor soundproofing between rooms.

Features

Excellent breakfast menu with in-room option included in rate

Breakfast, included in the room rate, is a real treat, with everything from continental fare to full English to smoked salmon,
bagels, muffins, and daily specials -- all served in the bright and airy
breakfast room or in guests' rooms. The bed-and-breakfast also has a pleasant
lounge area with daily newspapers, a good-size car park on-site, and free Wi-Fi
throughout the property.
