The Barcelo Costa Vasca is an upscale property about a 35-minute walk to the old town of San Sebastian, and a 15-minute walk to the beach. There's a seasonal outdoor swimming pool and a spa with sauna and fitness center. The property is popular for weddings and proms.
Scene
Large nine-story hotel outside the city center
From the outside, Barcelo Costa Vasca looks a bit imposing. The brick facade with jutting cement balconies isn't exactly welcoming, but pops of bright red paint and potted plants do work to lighten the effect. There are circular islands of green grass with red tables and chairs for lounging. Inside, the atmosphere is much warmer. One wall is made up of a beach photograph mural. Brown or white leather armchairs look comfortable if a bit worn. The lobby bar is nicely decorated with a huge wood-burning fireplace and Lucite chairs.
Location
In a quiet, residential neighborhood outside the center of San Sebastian
Barcelo Costa Vasca doesn't have the most ideal location for those without a car. It's about a 35-minute walk to the old town, and about a 15-minute walk to Ondarreta Beach. Bus service is not available from the hotel, and there's a fee for parking in the lot. The neighborhood itself is residential and quiet. Cars can be rented from Avis in the hotel lobby.
Rooms
Modern and trendy with balconies, which can impede with privacy
Each room at Barcelo Costa Vasca has a private balcony, though the angle from some of them allows guests to see into other rooms. Additionally, a slim silver bar is all that separates one balcony from the next. Clean lines, hardwood floors, and white linens look fresh, while Lucite chairs, photograph-style wall murals, and flat-screen TVs give rooms a sleek feel. Bathrooms have full bathtubs, and the rooms are clean.
Features
Swimming pool and fitness room -- plus breakfast (and lots of fees)
There are some nice features at Barcelo Costa Vasca. The spa area includes a fitness center, three treatment rooms, and a Finnish sauna. Ulia, the on-site restaurant, is a fun spot with an open kitchen where guests can watch chefs cook. The large outdoor seasonal swimming pool is ideal for families.
