The Praktik Garden is a modern and artistic hotel conveniently located in the Eixample neighborhood near restaurants and bars. There is a pretty rooftop terrace, homey dining room, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are cozy and clean -- though some, especially the singles, are very tight on space -- with fun, framed art and flat-screen TVs. Some rooms have gorgeous, modern bathrooms with subway tiles; others have pretty balconies. There is a pesky fee for breakfast and no bar on-site.
Scene
Hip, intimate hotel
Plants, vases, and artistic circus posters adorn the small lobby and hallways to the dining room, which looks like an expanded family dining room in an artistic home, nestled among original wall art and colorful rugs. There is no lounge area in the lobby, but it is a fun, trippy tunnel of plants and shelves. The best hangout space is the rooftop terrace and garden, equipped with umbrellas, lounge chairs, coffee tables, and a number of large plants constituting a peaceful, private, outdoor respite from the busy city.
Location
Central, surrounded by art
In the heart of Barcelona’s art nouveau district and representing its own flash of original style, the Praktik is a few minutes away from the Gaudi buildings, La Pedrera, Casa Battlo, and a myriad of art galleries and high-end international shops. A few blocks from Placa de Catalunya and Las Ramblas, the Girona Metro stop is five minutes away but all downtown hotspots –- including the Gothique quarter and the beach –- are within walking distance (20 to 30 minutes).
Rooms
Small and sparse, but chic, rooms
With stylish dangling lamps, mounted flat-screen TVs, and original framed prints set across a high shelf, the Garden Rooms are unquestionably cool, although they, like all the others, are noticeably devoid of standard amenities such as a desk and coffeemaker/kettle. The bathrooms are classy, equipped with pedestal sinks and subway tile walls. The Singles and Standard Rooms, save for the large beds, are small. The Superior Rooms with Terrace aren’t much bigger but the terrace is a great place to relax with a drink, gazing out upon the city (while many other rooms look directly onto a wall). Small and bare as some rooms are, they are all impeccably clean.
Features
Rooftop terrace, dining room, concierge help, and free Wi-Fi
Although it is a small operation, Praktik staff are helpful with travel arrangements and restaurant recommendations and the breakfast –- comprised of a coffeemaker and a variety of sandwich fixings –- is basic but authentic and fresh. There is no fitness center, pool, or bar, but the décor is original and the rooftop terrace and garden lounge is a lovely place to relax and take a break from the city.
