Bottom Line
This is a boutique luxury hotel with just 18 beautiful rooms. Some have extraordinary views, but all have great modern-chic style, Egyptian cotton linens, big windows, and lavish bathrooms; single rooms are a tad small, but upgrading to a double room gets you more space. With a great location just off Las Ramblas on a beautiful historic square, this hotel is within walking distance of the Gothic Quarter's many sights. A spa, rooftop terrace and pool, three brilliant restaurants, and a beautiful lobby round out this luxe property's many amenities.

Elegant modern design in a beautiful 19th-century building
Just at the entrance to the Neoclassic Placa Reial, the Hotel Do Placa Reial opened in 2012. Its grand building dates from 1856, and it was completely renovated in 2011. The lobby is decorated with cowhide benches, big abstract paintings, lush leather sofas, and bongo drums as tables. There are high, beamed ceilings, a spiral staircase, and gorgeous lighting fixtures. The bar is flecked in gold. An eco-friendly fireplace blazes in the wintertime, and there are plenty of cozy nooks where guests can watch the square reflected in mirrored panels.
The hotel is popular with luxury travelers and local partiers alike who frequent the hotel's and neighborhood's many restaurants and bars, so it can be a bit noisy into the night.
Location
A prime location in the Placa Reial just off Las Ramblas
The Placa Reial is gorgeous, but as a major tourist mecca, it, like Las Ramblas, can be rife with scam artists and pickpockets. The hotel sits between the Placa Real and Las Ramblas, very close to the Liceu opera house and the Boquería market, and a few minutes' walk from the Gothic Quarter. It’s a convenient area from which to explore Barcelona. Shops, restaurants, and bars abound right outside the hotel’s door. The nearest metro station is Liceu on line L3, which is one stop from Placa Catalunya.
Rooms
Luxurious rooms with free soft drinks, high ceilings, and beautiful modern design
The 18 minimalism-inspired rooms here deserve their luxury billing: They are high-ceilinged, large, and full of light. Most have retained their original wooden beams and French windows overlooking Barcelona. The walls are decorated with modern art, and quirky headboards frame big, comfy mattresses outfitted in Egyptian cotton linen. Hardwood floors are sleek and pretty; some rooms have leather Mies van der Rohe chairs. Free Wi-Fi and Loewe televisions are also part of the deal, as is 24-hour room service. Lower category rooms can be a bit cramped.
Thoughtful touches include mini-fridges stocked with free soft drinks and giant wardrobes full of wooden hangers and umbrellas, plus chocolate-covered strawberries at check-in and truffles at night. Bathrooms are decked out with wooden floors, walk-in showers (some rooms have tubs, too), Molton Brown toiletries, plush robes, and slippers. Thin walls mean noise from neighboring rooms and hallways can sometimes be heard.
Features
Rooftop pool and lounge, spa, and three top-notch restaurants
The Hotel DO Placa Reial has a rooftop swimming pool, and a small, bamboo-filled spa. On the rooftop terrace, guests can soak up sun and feast on the view of the Placa Real and Barcelona’s dramatic rooftops and Gothic churches. In the summer, cocktails are served on the roof. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the building, and 24-hour concierge and room service.
The hotel may be small, but its gastronomic ambitions are lofty. Its three restaurants, La Cuina, La Terrassa, and El Terrat, focus on local ingredients, and are truly exceptional. La Cuina serves traditional, exquisitely prepared Catalain cuisine, while La Terrassa and El Terrat are more casual spots for tapas and snacks.
