The 58-room Hotel Barbara is a no-frills budget property with a convenient location in El Raval, close to Las Ramblas and the Drassanes Metro station. Its location is probably its strongest point, as it offers little in the way of services other than a free continental breakfast and computers for guests to use in the lobby. Rooms are basic, but clean, with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and safes for a fee. However, they can be noisy and some lack windows. There's no Wi-Fi in the rooms, but it is free in the lobby. Travelers looking for a budget property with more pizzazz could check out the Generator Barcelona, a colorful, hip hotel and hostel combo.
Scene
Simple, no-frills place for guests on a budget
We have nothing against budget hotels, but in a city that has a surplus of reasonably priced options with plenty of on-trend details and extras, the no-frills ethos at Hotel Barbara is disappointing. This hotel is housed in an older nondescript building, and guests enter the lobby through double glass doors. The reception area is small, but there are a couple of desks with computers set up for guests to use. Vending machines dispense drinks, and lockers are available for luggage storage. Exposed brick walls add a bit of historic charm, but overall the place is basic and characterless. Hallways to guest rooms are narrow and dark, and features are almost non-existent. The hotel attracts mostly couples and groups looking for a budget-friendly place, but some families, individuals, and even businesspeople stay here as well.
Location
Convenient El Raval location close to Las Ramblas and Drassanes Metro station
This hotel is located in El Raval, about a five-minute walk from Las Ramblas and about 10 minutes from the port. Several restaurants and bars are close to the hotel, as well as a number of shops. Gaudi's Palau Guell can be reached in about five minutes on foot, and Placa Catalunya is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. The Drassanes Metro station is about a five-minute walk from the hotel for getting to sights farther afield. Expect a commute of 22 minutes to reach Sagrada Familia by metro, and 40 minutes to Parc Guell by metro and walking. Guests should be cautious in the area after dark, however, as the neighborhood can be a bit dicey, though most travelers have no problems. Barcelona El Prat Airport is about 25 minutes away by car or 35 minutes by public transportation.
Rooms
Basic, bland rooms with weak air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, but no Wi-Fi
Rooms are the definition of basic, with wood floors, old-style bedspreads, and tiled walls that serve as headboards. Some have exposed brick walls, but decor is minimal and won't win any charm awards. Additionally, many of them are small (the Single Room has little space to move around) and some lack windows. Amenities include often weak air-conditioning, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, and safes (fee). Unfortunately, Wi-Fi isn't available in the rooms. Bathrooms also are basic and simple, with wall-mounted sinks, stand-up showers, and packages of soap and shower gel. Some rooms have tiny balconies, but views are of the building next door. Street and hallway noise can be heard in many rooms, as soundproofing is weak.
Features
Free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi in lobby, and computer desks
This simple hotel offers few services for guests. It does serve a free continental breakfast daily, although the selection is limited and previous guests aren't too enthusiastic about it. Two computers are set up in the lobby for guests to use at no charge, and Wi-Fi is free in the lobby as well.
