Bottom Line

With its 30 dorm-style or private rooms, the Hostel One Paralelo draws budget-conscious solo travelers and groups of friends looking to hang out and have fun. All rooms have air-conditioning and lockers. A Spanish-style breakfast is served every morning (for a fee), and there's free dinners, a lovely patio, and weekly events. The location -- on the fringes of Montjuic -- is not smack in the center of the action, but it is in walking distance to the Joan Miro Foundation and the Teatro Grec, which holds a famous festival through most of July. A nearby metro connects to the major attractions in about 15 minutes. Budget travelers may also want to consider Casa Garcia Barcelona Hostel, which includes breakfast and has a  more central location.

Scene

Fun hostel with a party-like vibe and a beautiful outdoor patio

Situated in a narrow, three-story tan building with bold teal trimming around doors and windows, Hostel One Paralelo stands out a bit from other buildings on its block. Public areas are cramped and a bit messy. The reception area is a long room with a flat-screen TV, wooden communal table, colorful walls, and a shelf with travel books and brochures. Shooting off from the lobby is a communal kitchen, where guests can cook their meals, and other areas with shared wooden tables that offer guests a chance to hang out and play games like dice, cards, or chess. The outdoor patio is the standout feature, though. Walls are decorated in Barcelona-themed graffiti, while the space is filled with a hot tub, a shaded tent, loungers, a jumble of patio furniture, and potted plants. During our visit, we noticed some foul odors and slack housekeeping.

Location

Outside of where the action is, but in walking distance to the metro and restaurants

Hotel One Paralelo is in Montjuic/Poble Sec, and it's not smack in the center of the action, although there are plenty of restaurants and bars on the surrounding streets. There's a metro a six-minute walk from the hostel, and it's about a 15-minute ride to La Rambla. There’s also a bus stop around the corner. The Joan Miro Foundation in Montjuic is a 10- to 15-minute walk from the hostel. Montjuic Castle is about a 25-minute walk away, and Fira de Barcelona is a 20-minute walk. It’s an 18-minute drive to Barcelona El-Prat Airport.

Rooms

No-frills dorms and private rooms with shared bathrooms; all have AC

Rooms include mixed dormitories for up to eight people, and a few private rooms. The dorm rooms are very basic and a bit tight on space with metal bunk beds, laminate wood flooring, colorful bedding or curtains, and a set of lockers (locks are available for a fee). Each bed has an outlet. Private rooms have double beds with two single twins pushed together. Amenities in all rooms include air-conditioning and heating, which can be adjusted with a remote borrowed from reception. All bathrooms are shared, and have showers and hand soap; if you’re lucky, some guests may have left toiletries behind for you. Keep in mind that the crowd here keeps late-night hours, so earplugs are advised for light sleepers. The hostel is currently upgrading private rooms to include wardrobes and desks, and plans to complete the upgrades in 2017.

Features

Patio with a hot tub, nightly outings, free dinners, and a communal kitchen

While this hostels decor and location can be lackluster, its features are quite nice and encourage plenty of socializing among guests. There's a lovely patio with a jetted tub that's open in the summer, shaded tables and chairs, and loungers. Each week, the hotel takes guests out to karaoke, bars, or clubs, and can usually arrange for free drinks or free entry. Every night, there’s free Italian or Spanish-style dinners (tips encouraged). Breakfast includes Spanish omelets, pastries, spreads, coffee, and juice for a small fee. Guests can use the communal kitchen, which has a microwave, coffeemaker, oven, stove, refrigerator, toaster, spices, utensils, and cookware. Beer, soda, and water is sold at low prices, and sangria is usually on hand during the week. Board games, books, cards, dice, and chess are on hand to encourage socializing. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and lockers can be rented for a fee.
