Bottom Line

Located five minutes from
Barcelona’s Mar Bella beach, the mid-range EuroHotel Diagonal Port
offers 115 simple, clean rooms with a modern, beachy vibe. The hotel is in Barcelona’s up-and-coming Poble Nou
district, outside of the city’s historic Ciutat Vella (Old City). There's a metro stop within a
seven-minute walk from the hotel that makes trips to the vibrant Barri Gotic in 15
minutes, but the area immediately surrounding the property lacks character
and can feel shabby. Guests looking to stay within Barcelona’s Ciutat Vella should
try the similarly priced Chic & Basic Zoo, which is more stylish than the EuroHotel and includes extra
amenities such as free coffee and snacks.

Scene

Modern hotel with contemporary touches, but overall conflicting decor

Housed in a modern building
built in 2001, the hotel makes a muddled first impression. Oak-veneer walls with large reproductions of paintings by
Catalan artists pop against black granite floors and sleek, contemporary
furniture, while a large zen garden, overstuffed recliners, and
display cases filled with jewelry create a conflicted, arguably tacky, aesthetic. A more thoroughly contemporary and inviting lounge
with a bar and terrace sits off the back of the lobby and provides a nice place
to relax after a day of sightseeing. Guests here run the gamut from tourist families to business travelers.

Location

A five-minute walk to Mar Bella beach, near a metro station

The Poble Nou
neighborhood surrounding the hotel is one of Barcelona’s up-and-coming districts,
and is home to the stunning new Design Museum of Barcelona along with plenty of street art,
galleries, and start-up firms. However, the blocks immediately surrounding the
hotel aren’t very charming and the neighborhood’s hippest areas take over 20
minutes to reach on foot. The biggest draw here is the hotel’s proximity to the
beach, which is a five-minute walk from the front door. The Rambla del Poble Nou has a few good restaurants and bars and is
also five minutes away on foot, while the Poble Nou Metro stop is a
seven-minute walk from the hotel, with trips to Barri Gotic taking about 15
minutes. Taxis can reach El Prat International Airport in 20 minutes, though
the trip can be completed in under an hour using the metro and the Aerobus.

Rooms

Simple, clean rooms with a neutral, beachy vibe

Standard Rooms are modern
and clean, featuring blond-oak veneer desks, nightstands, and half-paneled walls
with metal Art Deco-style accents that give the spaces some retro flair. The neutral color
scheme lends the guest rooms a beachy vibe that matches the Mediterranean Sea
views available from some rooms. The overall ambience is enhanced by chestnut laminate floors, comfortable,
sand-colored chairs, and soft-blue throw pillows. The hotel also offers Family Rooms with extra beds and seating and a Junior Suite with sea views. All rooms have flat-screen
TVs, minibars, and safes. Beds have
brown satin runners, although the exposed bed frames are unattractive. Bathrooms
are small, with granite floors and beige-tiled walls, narrow walk-in showers, and heated towel racks.

Features

Lounge with bar and outdoor terrace, plus attractive meeting rooms on-site

One of the best features
of this hotel is its lounge and terrace at the back of the lobby,
where coffee, cocktails, and light snacks are served throughout the day. Both spaces feel chic and relaxing, with plenty of
comfortable seating, though the plant-lined terrace doesn’t have much of a view. The surface of the bar itself -- a glass-covered architectural model of the Barcelona coastline -- adds a quirky twist to the space. A breakfast buffet with good hot and cold
options is also available (for a fee) in the on-site Alacena Restaurant, which also offers decent
lunch and dinner menus. The hotel has six attractive meeting rooms with plenty of windows, and audiovisual equipment is available on request. There's also a business center and free Wi-Fi. Laundry, and dry cleaning are available, as is room service, though the hours are limited.
