Bottom Line

Clean rooms and a rooftop pool make the Astoria Hotel a solid value for tourists looking for a mid-range hotel that is nonetheless elegant. Located in the Eixample District with plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, the hotel has 117 modern (but stark) guest rooms with minibars and free Wi-Fi. An on-site restaurant with a diner atmosphere serves breakfast and lunch. As an added bonus, the hotel has a room filled with pictures and books illustrated by Catalan artist Ricard Opisso. Scene

Mini art museum and interesting architectural details

When the bar is open, guests can get a cocktail and peruse more than 100 framed illustrations by Catalan artist Ricard Opisso that line the walls of a room off the lobby at the Astoria Hotel. The small museum also has a long, glass display case filled with books illustrated by Opisso who was once an apprentice to Antoni Gaudí and later published work in a French satirical magazine. Other visually interesting details punching up the hotel’s interior include a grand spiral staircase and a marble colonnade, and colorful, vintage Art Nouveau advertisement posters that decorate the walls of the restaurant where breakfast and lunch are served. Mostly couples stay here, but families and business travelers have also been known to book rooms.

Location

Located in Barcelona’s Eixample neighborhood a block off of Avinguda Diagonal

The Astoria Hotel is located in Barcelona’s Eixample District a block off Avinguda Diagonal within walking distance of at least two Gaudi masterpieces. There are plenty of shops, bars, and restaurants nearby. The Diagonal metro station is a short walk away, putting the Sagrada Familia within a 15-minute commute via subway. The airport is a 20- to 30-minute drive.

Rooms

Clean, soundproof rooms with wood floors and marble bathrooms

The impressively clean rooms at the Astoria Hotel have wood floors and headboards and modern furnishings such as glass desks and avant-garde art. All rooms are soundproof and have wall-mounted flat-screen LCD TVs with satellite channels, minibars, and free Wi-Fi. Marble bathrooms have shower/tub combinations. Rooms with terraces are available, but most rooms lack an inspiring view, and there are no coffeemakers in the rooms. Decor is sleek, bordering on bland, but they nonetheless feel modern.

Features

Rooftop pool and solarium with exercise machines and a sauna

There's a terrace and a small blue-tiled pool on the rooftop with a nearby showerhead for rinsing off, along with a fitness center with three exercise machines, including a treadmill, and a small sauna. The diner-style restaurant and bar are both decorated with vintage posters, and the restaurant serves a breakfast buffet with cold cuts, croissants, and cereal for a fee, and a Catalan lunch menu. A business center and meeting rooms are also available.
