Smack in the middle of the action in bustling Sukhumvit, the two-and-a-half-pearl THEE Bangkok offers good value with an excellent location and pleasantly furnished, well-maintained rooms. There are, however, some trade-offs. The entry-level Superior Rooms lack windows (they try to compensate with light boxes, but it doesn't really work) and thin walls are less than ideal for those who want quiet at night. Moreover, there aren't many facilities beyond a small fitness center and a lobby bar -- though there is a cafe on the ground floor where guests can go for meals. Travelers willing to spend a little more will find lots of promising alternatives in the immediate area, such as the Hotel Mermaid Bangkok just across the main road, which has an outdoor pool and nicer rooms.
Scene
Contemporary value hotel popular with tourists from East Asia including younger couples and groups
Housed in a contemporary five-story building with a small fountain feature out front, THEE is a small value property with a good location and pleasant decor, but limited facilities. A lot of the guests here are younger tourists from elsewhere in Asia, and due to its location in the heart of Bangkok, it can get a bit noisy at times, particularly in the wee hours of the morning when guests return from nights of drinking. Still, it's overall a sleek and pleasant spot, with a lovely lobby filled with a few sets of low pincushion sofas and chairs in hues of taupe, gray, and off-white. There's a small bar near the lobby with a few barstools. A seating area out front belongs to a separate restaurant not affiliated with the hotel. A single elevator leads up to the rooms, and there's a stairway for guests who want the extra exercise.
Location
Central location in Sukhumvit, near shops, bars, restaurants, spas, and public transportation
THEE Bangkok is located on Soi 22 in Sukhumvit, a three-minute walk from the main road. There's a hair salon and a cafe right outside the main door and a 24-hour minimart across the street. The whole area is lively, especially in the evening, with lots of bars, massage parlors (both legit and illicit), and roadside vendors selling all sorts of snacks. Phrom Phong and Asok BTS (skytrain) stations are equidistant from the hotel and each takes around 10 minutes to reach. Getting to tourist attractions is fairly easy. Jim Thompson House is about a half-hour away by skytrain (with a bit of walking at the end). The Royal Palace takes about the same amount of time to reach by car. The iconic Wat Arun is a bit trickier to reach by public transportation, but it's about a 35-minute taxi ride away (or less for those willing to brave a motorbike taxi). Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport are each around 45 minutes to an hour away from the hotel, depending on traffic.
Rooms
Pleasantly decorated rooms with comfortable beds but thin walls -- some without windows
This hotel has three types of room, all with similar, pleasant decor schemes including light-wood floors and doorways, off-white walls, beige faux-leather head boards, and accent walls painted to look like they have crown molding. Long tables with flat-screen TVs run alongside the walls opposite the beds and also hold cabinets with mini-fridges and coffee- and tea-making facilities. While there are no closets, rooms do have racks with a few hangers for clothes. Wi-Fi is free. Split air-conditioning units keep things cool. The units are a bit noisy, but this can help drown out the sound from the hallways and adjacent rooms, that can be an issue due to thin walls. Recessed and lamp lighting keeps the look soft, but be warned that the entry-level, 20-square-meter (215-square-foot) Superior Rooms lack windows. The hotel has tried to work around it by offering light box features that look like windows but actually are nothing of the sort. The next category up are Deluxe Rooms. These do have windows and some are a smidge larger than their Superior counterparts. Both categories come with comfortable beds, in configurations of either two twins or one king. The hotel also offers 37-square-meter (398-square-foot) Suite Rooms, which are considerably larger. These units have windows in the bathrooms and large beige pincushion sofas at the foot of the king-size beds. Superior and Deluxe bathrooms offer wall-mounted body wash and shampoo dispensers, vessel sinks, and hairdryers, plus glassed-in walk-in showers, while Suite Rooms add huge soaking tubs.
Features
Fitness center and free Wi-Fi, but no pool, breakfast, or restaurant
THEE Bangkok offers little in terms of facilities. There's no pool, spa, business center, restaurant, or even a breakfast room (though there is a restaurant adjacent to the main entrance, plus a small lobby bar where drinks are served). There is, however, a fitness center on the third floor with a treadmill and an exercise bike along with a rack of free weights. However, it's in a tiny glassed-in room opposite the elevators, so guests may feel like they're in an aquarium. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and there's a small luggage room. The hotel can also arrange airport transfers and laundry services on request, but they aren't a particularly good value. Wi-Fi is free and fast throughout the hotel.
