Bottom Line

The Royal View Resort is a three-pearl hotel with affordable rates in central Bangkok overlooking a leafy park. Its 105 large, contemporary guest rooms all have seating areas, mini-fridges, and unfurnished balconies, some of which overlook the park. A casual restaurant offers a weekly Thai buffet and there's a lobby bar for coffee or cocktails. There's also a small spa that has limited services but specializes in traditional Thai massage, although the hotel lacks a fitness center. Cheaper rates in the area are hard to find, but for a bit more in downtown Bangkok, the four-pearl Adelphi Forty-Nine is a step up and adds an outdoor pool.

Scene

Relaxed mid-range hotel overlooking a park

The hotel is a modern eight-story building across the street from a city park, giving it a relaxing atmosphere despite being close to bustling neighborhoods. A terrace in front of the entrance has glass tables paired with rustic log stools and serves as a smoking area. Because of its placement, smoke can waft inside and linger in the hallways, though the scent of lemongrass and tropical flowers in the spa can help negate it. Guests are pampered with Thai herb drinks and cold towels on arrival at a curved black reception desk, and the lobby opens up on either side with lounge areas filled with modern furnishings. Guests are a mix of couples and families, along with some business travelers.

Location

Close to the Victory Monument in central Bangkok across from Santiphap Park

The Royal View Resort is in a residential and commercial district walking distance to inexpensive shopping, restaurants, and street food stalls. The area is convenient to public transportation: several bus stops, and the Victory Monument BTS Skytrain station are within a seven-minute walk away. It's also an 11-minute walk to Ratchaprarop Station, where travelers can catch the Airport Rail Link to Suvarnabhumi Airport. Pratunam Market (Thailand's largest clothing market) and The Palladium World Shopping Centre is roughly a 20-minute walk. It's a little less than a 10-minute walk to Victory Monument, erected in June 1941 to commemorate the Thai victory in the Franco-Thai War. Suvarnabhumi Airport is about a 22-minute drive, or a 37-minute trip by Airport Rail Link from Ratchaprarop Station. Don Mueang International Airport is 20 minutes by car, but it can take twice as long in traffic.

Rooms

Contemporary decor, mini-fridges, unfurnished balconies

The hotel has 105 contemporary guest rooms with tiled floors, dark-wood furniture, and gold accents. All open to small balconies with either city or park views, but they're unfurnished (and there isn't enough room to bring a chair out). The large standard rooms are about 376 square feet, with plenty of space for two twin beds or double beds, along with seating areas that have sofas or armchairs with coffee tables. They also have small desks with reading lights and handsome black wooden chairs, but some of the furnishings are showing minor visible wear. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, electric kettles, and free Wi-Fi. Suites add larger living areas; some add wet bars and and park views. The bathrooms are a bit dated, with old tiles that could use renovation, and all have average shower/tub combos.

Features

Buffet restaurant, lobby bar, Thai massage, 24-hour internet corner, but no gym

The Royal View Restaurant has an American and Asian breakfast buffet (fee), along with an all-day menu of western and Asian cuisine. There's also a weekly Thai dinner buffet. Around the corner, a lobby bar serves coffee and cocktails in a casual lounge. In the absence of a full spa, the Chaba Massage Center has several treatment rooms for authentic Thai massage and foot massages, but the hotel lacks a fitness center. Other amenities include a 24-hour internet corner with a pair of computers, free parking in a limited underground garage or with street permits, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
