The upscale 201-roomed Mode Sathorn Hotel is sharp, contemporary hotel located in Bangkok's business-heavy Sathorn neighborhood. Each room is dressed in modern lines and funky splashes of the hotel's signature purple, and all include bathrooms sporting separate tubs and showers. All also have great city views. Located next-door to the Surasak BTS, access to public transportation is easy, which is good as the immediate area is sedate at night. A 360-degree rooftop bar and an infinity pool are some of the hotel's highlights; and there's also a 24-hour gym, full-service spa, and two restaurants. For an more classic alternative to the Mode's trendy interiors, the Eastin Grand Hotel Sathorn across the street has a kids' club and business features, but higher rates.
Scene
Modern hotel with lots of sleek style that draws a young and hip crowd
The Mode Sathorn Hotel is a contemporary property that prides itself on its city views, which are available from all rooms and many common areas, and help amplify the sharp, contemporary decor found throughout the property. Two main elevators service all of the floors, and the third has a glass window that makes for an exhilarating climb to the top of the building, offering yet another lovely view of Bangkok. While chicly designed with wood floors and ceilings, labyrinthine metal decor, leather couches, and the occasional rattan chair, form sometimes overrides function in the lobby. For example, dim lighting and the confusing layout of the reception and concierge areas make check-in a bit difficult, and the elevators aren't always enough to ferry guests efficiently throughout the hotel. Nevertheless, the general vibe is cool and modern, and caters to the young adult and LGBT communities. Most guests come in pairs or small groups, though solo business travelers and families pass through, as well.
Location
In the Sathorn business district, across from Surasak BTS
The Mode Sathorn is located across a busy thoroughfare from the Surasak BTS station in Bangkok's Sathorn business district. There isn't much in the immediate vicinity for tourists to see, but transportation to and from Bangkok's many destinations is easy by skytrain. It's only one train stop or a 12-minute walk to the Chao Phraya Riverfront, and two stops (a 10-minute ride) to the lively Patpong Night Market and the more happening parts of Silom Road, which has plenty of nightlife and dining options. There are some malls along Silom Road, but there's more shopping in the Siam area and along Sukhumvit Road, about 15 minutes away by skytrain. Wat Pho and Wat Arun are no more than a half hour away by car or train each. Peak weekday commute times can make hailing cabs difficult, and keep in mind that the skytrain doesn't run around the clock. Bangkok's traffic is maddening during much of the day, so budget an hour to reach Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang Airports.
Rooms
Chic, contemporary rooms with great city views plus separate showers and soaking tubs in bathrooms
Each of the hotel's 20 rooms is chic and bright, designed with different themes like Metropolitan Chic and Urban Stylist. At least one accent rug or wall in the hotel's signature purple and/or magenta brings a splash of color to the modern blacks, whites, grays, and tans. Higher-end rooms have faux wood tiling while lower-end rooms have carpeting plus furniture that ranges from sharp and square to rounded and retro-futuristic. We did spot some minor wear and tear on furniture and floors. Otherwise clean and neatly designed, power outlets can be a bit oddly placed in the room -- far from the work desk or nowhere near where the electric kettles are found. Standard features include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibar, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms come equipped with modern bath and shower units with good water pressure. Large windows brighten up the room and bath time with great views of Bangkok's cityscape.
Features
Infinity pool and rooftop bar with stunning city views, plus spa, gym, and restaurants
Features are pretty numerous at this mid-size hotel, in keeping with the hotel's four-pearl rating. The heated pool on the 11th floor provides lots of lounging space -- including seats built into the water -- making it better for relaxing than swimming. Its infinity edge offers a beautiful view of Bangkok. Aside from the pool bar, The Roof @38th Bar offers even more stunning city views with more intimate seating. Both are decent alternatives to the scarcity of good bars in the area.Minimalist treatment rooms at the Borisud Pure Spa are dressed in tatami and white marble for a perfect blend of modern and traditional. Massages, a whirlpool, and an infrared sauna get high marks from previous guests. The 24-hour fitness center is tiny, but functional, with up-to-date machines and plenty of weights. The single window and mirrored walls do little to keep the room from feeling cramped if more than three people are working out at once. The Sathorn provides a daily buffet breakfast that's only included with some rates. The hotel's bistro-style cafe and bakery, BLD, is open all day and specializes in modern homestyle European dishes. It's popular with hotel guests and locals alike. Free indoor valet and self-parking are available to all guests. Laundry services, babysitting services, and others are also available for a fee or are included in certain reservations. Free Wi-Fi can be found throughout the hotel.
