Bottom Line

The three-pearl Lamphu Tree House sits on the Lamphu Canal away from the busy tourist areas on a pedestrian-only street in the historic district. Traditional Thai design is evident in the Thai silks and woodwork of this boutique hotel. While some rooms have balconies, jetted tubs, and canal views, others lack windows. All rooms feature teakwood accents, and have mini-fridges with free bottled water. There is a small outdoor pool with a patio off to the side. A rooftop terrace has lounge seating and tables, and impressive views of the city. The hotel has a small business center and free Wi-Fi.

Lamphu Tree House

Scene

A traditional Thai boutique hotel away from the downtown hubub

This quiet and serene property can be reached only on foot. Wooden Buddhas, terra-cotta floors, and traditional Thai woodcarvings adorn the lobby and restaurant, whose big windows let in natural light. The restaurant has a lovely outdoor deck and patio, which it shares with the pool area. Common areas are limited -- the restaurant/patio area and rooftop terrace are the only places where guests can hang out. The rooftop terrace has seating and offers excellent views of Bangkok. Even though it’s not smack in the downtown commercial area, the Lamphu Tree house offers great value, and an authentic Thai vibe.

Location

In the Khao San Road and Banglamphu historic area

The Lamphu Tree House is in the historic district on a tree-lined alley overlooking the Lamphu Canal. No cars are allowed on the street, so the hotel can be difficult to find. The Wat Bowonniwet Vihara, Khao San Road, and Democracy Monument are within walking distance, but the main attractions, including the MBK Center, Siam Square, and Pratunam Market, the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the Grand Palace, and Wat Pho are all within a 10- to 15-minute drive of the hotel.

Rooms

Contemporary yet traditional rooms with teakwood touches and comfortable beds

Golden teakwood from old Thai houses accent these traditional rooms. Decorated with intricate and colorful bed runners, the rooms have tile or wood floors. Some rooms have balconies with views of the canal and others have large jetted tubs. There are mini-fridges with free bottled water, flat-screen TVs, and comfortable beds. Standard Rooms lack windows, while others open onto the rooftop terrace. Bathrooms vary -- some are large with black or orange tile and rainfall showerheads, while others are tiny with small showers and wood floors. Separate, colorful bowl sinks are outside the bathrooms. Air-conditioning units can take a while to rev up.

Features

On-site restaurant/bar with great reviews; free business center and Wi-Fi

At this is a boutique hotel there isn't room for a whole lot of features. There is a small outdoor pool, whose tiny deck area is shared with the restaurant/bar. A breakfast of pancakes, fried rice, scrambled eggs, ham, and bacon is included in the room rate. The restaurant/bar also serves lunch and dinner, but the selection is limited. There's a computer station in the lobby where guests can print documents and surf the Internet for free. Wi-Fi is also free.
