Bottom Line

The InterContinental Bangkok is a top-notch hotel located in the heart of central Bangkok. With a Skytrain entrance just by the door, guests can avoid Bangkok's infamous traffic, and the city's best shopping, dining, and drinking are all within walking distance. The rooms here are extremely spacious, well appointed, and feature LCD TVs and iPod docks, as well as comfortable Posturpedic mattresses. The resort has a host of tasty restaurants, from Chinese to Italian, to a high-end steakhouse, and there's also a state-of-the-art fitness center. The hotel also is well-prepared for business visitors with some of the best meeting and conference facilities in the city. The only blemishes on this stylish place are its high price tag and the dense traffic zone it sits in, making taxi rides during rush hour unbearable.

Scene

Stylish and busy, with a mix of leisure and business travelers

The InterContinental is always bustling and busy, with a mix of leisure and business travelers. The opulent lobby, with its high ceilings, thick pillars, and grand chandelier, opens up to many of the hotel's elegant features including the fashionable restaurants, popular with well-dressed locals as well as guests, and the spacious conference centers that bring in plenty of business groups. While the scene here may be stylish and regal, it is also relaxed, which families around the pool and guests going to and fro between fitness center workouts and spa treatments can attest to. While the hotel is a bit too large and impersonal to feel romantic, it is suitable for just about every type of traveler.

Location

Smack in the heart of downtown near the best shopping, drinking, and dining, with great public transport access

The InterContinental is located smack in the heart of downtown Bangkok, just steps from the convenient BTS Skytrain. In fact the train line even has an entrance straight into the hotel entrance. The hotel sits in the heart of Bangkok's shopping district, a 10-minute walk from the Central World Shopping Center and also the elegant Siam Paragon Mall. There are plenty of restaurants and bars all around the hotel, and this is about as centrally placed a spot as one can get in town. The only downside would be the heavy traffic in this area, which can make getting to and from the airport laborious, but the proximity to the skytrain (and subsequent connection to the Airport Link light rail) makes things easy.

Rooms

Elegant and spacious, featuring comfortable mattresses, bathtubs, and iPod docks

With the standard Grand Deluxe rooms coming in at 45 square meters each, the InterContinental has some of the more spacious rooms in town, and they just get larger from there, as the suites are over 100 square meters. All rooms have elegant furnishings and feature comfortable Posturpedic mattresses, plus modern conveniences like iPod docks, LCD televisions, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and marbled bathrooms with separate showers and tubs. Upper floor rooms have excellent views of the Bangkok cityscape, and the Club version of the rooms give Club Lounge privileges like free cocktail hours, WiFi, and express check out. The only downside to the stylish rooms is the need to pay for Wi-Fi for guests who aren't IHG members.

Features

A vast selection of restaurants and bars, luxury fitness center, and decent pool, plus an elegant spa will keep guests very happy

The hotel is stocked with facilities and features to keep guests happy. For gourmets, the snazzy Grossi Italian restaurant, delectable Summer Palace Chinese, and superb Fireplace Grill steakhouse lead the way. The fitness center here is state-of-the-art and spacious, and while the pool isn't Bangkok's biggest or best, it is nevertheless a sunny spot with enough room for the whole family. The hotel also features an excellent spa with soaking pools in the treatment rooms, and for business travelers, it has some of Bangkok's best conference and meeting facilities.

All-Inclusive / Food

An extensive selection, ranging from fine Italian to Cantonese to an elegant French grill/steakhouse, plus a gourmet buffet restaurant for all meals

The InterContinental features a staggering array of eating options. Downstairs, Grossi Trattoria is the brainchild of master celebrity chef Guy Grossi, who runs the award-winning Grossi Florentino in Melbourne. Fine Italian dining is on tap here with specialties like Burrata cheese, asparagus risotto, and designer pizzas to wow guests. Other options include the Summer Palace Chinese restaurant, famed for its dim sum brunches and Cantonese fare, and Charm, which serves high-end Thai cuisine. Also at the hotel is the Fireplace Grill, which serves Wagyu beef steaks and roast prime rib as part of its extensive grilled meat menu. If one is still hungry, Espresso is where the inclusive buffet breakfasts take place, as well as lunch and dinner buffets.
