With 517 rooms, the four-pearl Dusit Thani was the tallest building in Bangkok when it first opened. Things have faded since then, though the hotel's Silom location near Lumpini Park means that everything from trendy dining to wild nightlife and public transportation are a five- to 10-minute walk from the hotel. There are nine excellent dining options plus an elegant spa and modern gym, though the hotel lacks the luxury polish to which it aspires. Decor in many rooms is dated and heavy, with a bit of Thai style, and some are looking worn. It's worth considering hotels like the Shanghai Mansion, in bustling Chinatown, or the Landmark Bangkok, near Sukhumvit Road, for a lot more style at a similar price point.
Scene
Upscale hotel with luxury aspirations and traditional Thai style that's showing its age
Once the tallest building in Bangkok -- and one of the city's older hotels -- the Dusit Thani is now overshadowed by its competitors. We've visited more than a few Dusit Thani properties throughout Thailand, and in many ways this flagship outpost stays true to form. While everything is pleasant -- and an abundance of upmarket features and details are almost luxurious -- the mixture of gaudy and dated decor diminishes the overall effect. The lobby, for instance, is decked in boldly patterned carpets, classic teak furniture, silk pillows, and white pillars with gold applique designs. It's all grand enough, but the impression isn't particularly stylish. Still, guests flock to this property, with many staying here time and time again. The hotel's work-friendly amenities and proximity to Silom's business district are a perk for business travelers, though couples and families pass through as well given the address near the Silom district and Lumpini Park.
Location
In the heart of the Silom business district, near trendy dining and public transit
Located directly across from Lumpini Park just off Silom Road, this hotel is in a busy area that's convenient for business and leisure travelers. Silom Road is home to banks and corporations, plus some high-end shopping -- the Silom Complex mall is a three-minute walk around the corner. Those seeking a little more adventure are in luck too, as the notorious Patpong Night Market is a 10-minute walk away. There's trendy dining along Convent Road for those seeking something more high-brow, also a 10-minute walk from the hotel. The Silom Metro station is essentially underneath the hotel, while the Sala Daeng Skytrain station takes about five minutes to reach on foot. Expect a 35-minute skytrain trip to sights like Chatuchak Market. Traffic in Bangkok is notoriously awful, and it can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to reach Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi International Airports.
Rooms
From simple and dated to large and elegant, rooms are a mixed bag
The spacious twin- and king-size rooms at Dusit Thani look fine enough on paper -- decor includes elegant teakwood furniture and traditional Thai silks -- but unfortunately rooms range in quality based on price point. Entry-level Superior Rooms look tired, with dated wall art, scuffed tables, and odors from old carpeting. More expensive rooms feel fresher and are decked out in elaborate wood accents, gilded furniture, and have walls of windows that help keep them bright. Additionally, many rooms sport private balconies or terraces with nice views of Lumpini Park, the pool, or the bustling streets of Bangkok. Some guests have noted that noise from traffic outside and from other rooms can be heard on occasion.Standard features include free Wi-Fi, desks, flat-screen TVs, minibars with free water, electric kettles, safes, and air-conditioning. Dusit Club Rooms and suites come with additional perks detailed below, but also receive private butlers, iPod docks, and free ironing services. Bathrooms are likewise variable, but we spotted dated faucets and yellowing tiles. All have a generous amount of counter space, shower/tub combos, and an array of toiletries.
Features
Elegant spa, small pool, modern gym, and plenty of on-site dining and shopping
This large hotel has plenty of features packed in under its roof. The Devarana Spa is an elegant, tranquil space well known for its forceful massages using scented oils that are coupled with steam showers or even scented baths. Alternatively, the hotel's hexagonal courtyard pool is a little underwhelming given the hotel's size, and there are just a few lounge chairs ringing the water's edge. There's a poolside bar for sips and noshes. While the DFiT Fitness Centre isn't open around the clock, it's spacious and well-equipped, with modern treadmills, weights, and other equipment. A driving range and squash courts are also available. The hotel has nine well-liked dining options, from local to international cuisines, including Vietnamese, Thai, Pacific Coastal, and American venues. The Lobby Lounge also offers a relaxing afternoon tea, and room service is available 24/7. An on-site souvenir shop, florist, beauty salon, tour desk, and even medical services help to make the hotel a convenient one-stop shop.Dusit Club rooms and all suites include premium features like access to the Dusit Club Lounge, where a private check-in desk is available and refreshments are served all day. Free local phone calls, a dedicated business center with computers, and access the Club Lounge Boardroom are additional advantages for business travelers. Convention and meeting rooms can be rented, with space for 10 to 1,500 attendees. A parking garage and valet parking are available, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
