The Davis Bangkok is an upscale hotel with three different wings located on busy Soi 24, a side road of the even bigger Sukhumvit Road. The 247 rooms are modern and well-furnished, and the style lives up to the property's boutique billing; they are spread amongst the cheaper Corner Wing and the Main Wing, while private villas are found out back in the Baan Davis area. The hotel has two restaurants and is connected to a plaza full of eateries and shops, including Starbucks. A small pool, fitness center, and spa are all housed together on an upper floor. The area's rush hour traffic and distance from the Skytrain are the main drawbacks, but the hotel is elegant, and doesn't really have much competition in this location.
Scene
Modern property with spacious, somewhat chilly interiors and a busy lobby full of suit-wearing corporate folks
The Davis is a busy and bustling place, which isn't surprising given that it is the major luxury hotel in this area. The main entrance is through an elegant, nine-story, white-stone building with two lion statues flanking the glass doors. Inside, the large lobby is full most of the time with guests heading into the Gallery Cafe or the adjoining Au Bon Pain bakery, or just waiting for meetings or arrivals. The hotel gets a large Asian clientele, and is one of the major corporate stays in the area, thanks to its excellent conference and meeting facilities, as well as its spacious rooms (some with kitchenettes and suited for longer stays). It's on the larger side for a boutique hotel, which the Davis bills itself as, and there are a lot of suits and more well-dressed folks here than in neighboring properties. It isn't all work at the Davis though; the hotel's other popular hangout spot is the leisure area upstairs, where the lovely, curved pool and sun loungers are located. Decor throughout the two restaurants is simple and modern, with a mainly black and white color scheme, light-wood furnishings, and the occasional modern print hanging on the wall. Hotel aside, the most popular spot at the Davis is the on-premise plaza, 24th Avenue, which houses fast food joints, a sushi bar, a Starbucks, and other bars and eateries that tend to stay busy all day and night.
Location
Busy neighborhood with bad traffic; not within walking distance of Skytrain
The Davis is located on busy Soi 24, a side road coming off of major Sukhumvit Road, which is full of bars, restaurants, and shops. Soi 24 is no slouch itself when it comes to eating and drinking, and there are large supermarkets (Ran Nipha Thon Ni Ran Chai Kun, for example) also within walking distance of the hotel. The one major drawback to this area is that it is not within walking distance of the Skytrain or the subway up on Sukhumvit -- the hotel does provide a free tuk-tuk shuttle service to both. However at rush hour, Soi 24 is a chaotic zoo, and the only real way of moving is via the rather dangerous motorcycle taxis.
Rooms
Dark and stylish with design touches, large flat-screen TVs, and full bathtubs
There is a wide selection of room choice at the Davis. In the Main Wing, guests can opt for the standard Superior rooms or the unique Design rooms, plus several higher categories. Superior rooms have microwaves, small sinks, and cutlery; Chinese Design rooms are decked out in red with lots of elegant artwork. The hotel's cheapest digs are the Studio rooms in the Corner Wing. All rooms have large flat-screen TVs, safes, stocked minibars, coffee and tea facilities, and full bathtubs in the beige-tile bathrooms. The decor in each room is quite fancy, with the only drawback being the lack of balconies and views. There are also a few two- and three-bedroom traditional Thai villas known as Baan Davis, hidden behind the main buildings; suitable for groups or families, villas have fine wood design and furniture, and shared access to a private pool. Wi-Fi access requires an extra fee for some rooms.
Features
Plaza with food and bars, Gallery Cafe serving buffet breakfasts, conference facilities, spa/fitness center, and pool
The Gallery Cafe in the Main Wing serves buffet breakfasts as well as Asian and continental cuisine throughout the day and night. When both wings are full, the Corner Wing opens up a smaller restaurant/bar called The Living Room, which serves drinks and a la carte Asian-fusion cuisine. The attached plaza, 24th Avenue, houses a Starbucks, fast food, and several other restaurants and shops; there is also an Au Bon Pain on the premises. For leisure, the hotel has a swimming pool, two-room fitness center, and spa all under the same roof. The spa is segregated by sex, with the respective male and female locker rooms also here for fitness center guests. There is an indoor hot tub, as well as another one next to the main swimming pool. The hotel, being a corporate favorite, also has extensive meeting rooms, ballrooms, and a large business center to handle all needs.
