The 130-room Citadines Sukhumvit 8 Bangkok is a mid-range hotel
that attracts both long-term and short stay guests with rooms that have full
kitchens and modern amenities, though they can feel a bit cramped. There is a
small rooftop swimming pool as well as a fitness area, while the on-site
restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch. Located on a quiet street off of
bustling Sukhumvit Road, there are lots of eating and drinking options nearby,
as well as public transportation. Guests complain about slow Wi-Fi, however,
and there's a charge for a faster connection. For a hotel with more features,
travelers might want to consider the nearby Legacy Suites Bangkok or the Asia
Hotel Bangkok, though rates will be higher.
Scene
Apartment-style hotel attracts many business travelers and families
This mid-range apartment-hotel is mainly frequented by corporate
guests staying in Bangkok for a short time who value the quiet yet convenient
location. Like a true residential building, there aren't too many facilities or public spaces. The lobby is small and narrow, with a black and white
floor paired with wooden panelling on some of the walls and ceiling. Colorful
abstract paintings adorn the walls, while a couple of couches with colorful
Thai throw pillows provide seating. There are a few iMac computers here
for guests' use as well. In contrast with the Citadines Sukhumvit 11 -- which is far more lively -- this is a rather nondescript hotel in a
quiet spot with an equally quiet atmosphere, and while its prime demographic is
business travelers, families, couples, and groups of friends pass through as
well.
Location
A quiet street off of busy Sukhumvit Road, close to restaurants, bars, and shops
The hotel is situated on a quiet side street running off of
Sukhumvit Road, a major artery that's one of Bangkok's main areas for
dining, drinking, and nightlife. While Sukhumvit itself is congested with
traffic, it is also full of an endless array of restaurants, bars, and shops.
The Nana Skytrain station is just over a five-minute walk at the end of the
block, and the hotel also provides a free tuk-tuk shuttle to Sukhumvit Road.
The area surrounding the hotel is quiet and feels like a bit of an oasis, but
certain side streets in the area and the end of the block on which the hotel sits do have their share of go-go and hostess bars, and it may be a
bit seedy at night for some travelers. The trendy and vibrant Silom area, home
to chic restaurants and the notorious Patpong Night Market, is about 30 minutes
away by skytrain, while the Chatuchak Weekend Market will take 35 minutes to
reach by skytrain. Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi Airports are both around 40
minutes away by taxi, depending on traffic, though travelers should budget at
least an hour just in case.
Rooms
Contemporary apartment-style rooms with fully furnished kitchens
These rooms -- which are really apartments -- are geared
toward long-term residents as well as overnight guests, though the Studio Executive Rooms can
feel a bit cramped despite having full kitchens and dining/living areas.
Still, with Studios starting at 25 square meters (269 square feet), they have
more space than many hotel rooms in central Bangkok. Simple, contemporary decor
includes hardwood floors paired with white walls and sleek, modern
furniture. Full kitchens are outfitted with microwaves, stove tops,
toasters, tea- and coffee-making facilities, cookware, and dining-ware. The
One- and Two-Bedroom units have full-size fridges, while the Studio Executive
Rooms have small ones. Even the smaller rooms have loveseats, small dining
tables, writing desks, and plenty of closet space, and all units include modern
amenities like flat-screen TVs, DVD/MP3 players, electronic safes, irons and
ironing boards, and free Wi-Fi, though guests complain that it's slow and
faster Internet incurs an additional fee. Studio Room bathrooms have showers,
while larger units have shower/tub combos, with the toilet being in a separate
room from the bath. Unfortunately, there are no balconies here, and not much in
the way of views.
Features
Tiny rooftop pool, fitness corner, restaurant, and coin-operated laundry
The hotel offers a tiny rooftop pool, though it's only good for a
dip to cool off and there are neither lounge chairs nor space for sunbathing.
There's also a mid-size fitness center equipped with free weights and machines,
along with a few cardio trainers. The coin-operated laundry room next to the
pool and fitness center is convenient for those staying here long term. The
on-site restaurant, The 18, serves breakfast and lunch, but not dinner,
and offers both indoor and outdoor dining. Breakfast is not included in room rates,
and includes Thai and Western options, though doesn't get the best reviews --
cheaper and better options can be had in many of the stalls lining Sukhumvit
Road. The hotel has plans to change the concept and look of this restaurant, so
it may be upgraded in the near future. There are a few iMac computers for
guests' use in the lobby, and the hotel offers a free tuk-tuk shuttle to nearby
Sukhumvit Road and the skytrain station. Wi-Fi is free, but can be slow and
there's a fee to upgrade to a faster connection.
