Bottom Line

The 79-room Citadines Sukhumvit 16 Bangkok is an upper-middle-range, apartment-style hotel that is aimed mostly at the corporate market and long-term guests. Studios and one-bedroom units feature fully furnished kitchens, spacious living quarters, work desks, and modern amenities like flat-screen TVs, DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a small pool and fitness center up on the roof, along with a guest laundry, but there is no restaurant on-site -- though there is a small breakfast area. The hotel is within walking distance of the major Asok intersection, where guests can find both Skytrain and subway stations, along with the popular Terminal 21 shopping mall. Travelers might also want to consider Phachara Suites or the Legacy Suites Bangkok, both of which offer suites with kitchens/kitchenettes.

Citadines Sukhumvit 16 Bangkok

Scene

Small chain hotel with colorful lobby; mainly attracts corporate guests and long term stays

This is the smallest of the four Citadines properties that are all located in a similar radius around Sukhumvit Road. The small, six-story grey and orange building has its entrance underneath the parking garage space, and the lobby here consists of nothing more than a narrow gray floor and check-in desk, although it is considerably brightened by an orange-cushioned bench seating area, which is filled with colorful Thai textile-covered cushions, plus a couple of bright yellow abstract art paintings. Additionally, there is an iMac computer for guests' use, along with a newspaper rack if one should get bored, although most folks aren't lingering here long. The hotel, like the other Citadines properties nearby, are aimed at long-term and corporate guests, though their studios and one-bedroom units also attract families.

Location

Convenient location near subway, skytrain, shopping, and dining

Citadines Sukhumvit 16 is situated in a convenient location a five-minute walk to the Asok-Sukhumvit intersection, one of Bangkok's major hubs where guests will find a skytrain, subway station, and the Terminal 21 shopping mall. Additionally, Benjakitti Park, one of Bangkok's most enjoyable green spaces with jogging paths, bicycle tracks, and a large lake, is just around the corner from the hotel. There are many ethnic and local restaurants just about every way you turn, plus supermarkets and convenience stores up and down the street. Soi Cowboy, the naughty nightlife area, is 10 minutes up the road. There is plenty of traffic and hustle and bustle in the area, but it is certainly one of the most convenient and happening places to stay in town. Bangkok Airport is a 22-minute drive, or under a half-hour via public transportation.

Rooms

Clean, spacious units with full kitchens, two-person sofas, and dining tables

The hotel's apartment-like units are mainly geared towards long term residents, though overnight guests are also common. Clean and simple decor includes wood floors and white walls contrasted by yellow accents such as sofas, headboards, and TV stands, as well as bright abstract art on the walls. The Studio Executive and One-Bedroom Deluxe rooms feature fully equipped kitchens that come with microwave ovens, stovetop cookers, and toasters, and are supplied with pots and pans, dishes, cutlery, and hot water kettles for tea and coffee. The one-bedroom units have full-size refrigerator/freezers, while the Studio Executive Rooms have small ones. All rooms have two-seater sofas, small dining tables, writing desks, and plenty of closet space, as well as flat-screen TVs, DVD/MP3 players, electronic safes, iron and ironing boards, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms can be a bit small, but are clean and feature pleasant colorful mosaic tile accents that stand out against surrounding white and beige hues. Bathrooms are equipped with either walk-in showers or shower/tub combos as well as a small selection of toiletries. Unfortunately, there are no balconies here and not much in the way of views.

Features

Small rooftop swimming pool, fitness center, guest laundry facilities, breakfast niche, and free tuk-tuk shuttle to the corner

The hotel has a small swimming pool up on the roof, with a few sun loungers for those who want to laze in the sun. Adjacent to this is a small fitness center, equipped with not much more than some free weights, a treadmill, stationary bicycle, and a few weight machines. There is also a small guest laundry. Though there's no restaurant on-site, the hotel has a small breakfast area (breakfast included in some rates), plus room service is also available from the hotel's related Somerset property nearby. There is a computer available for guests' use in the lobby and Wi-Fi is free throughout. The hotel offers free tuk-tuk shuttle service up to the corner, which isn't really necessary considering how close it is on foot.
