Bottom Line

As the name suggests, the three-and-a-half-pearl Bangkok Hotel Lotus Sukhumvit is situated in the heart of Bangkok's busy Sukhumvit neighborhood, a popular area with lots of shopping malls, nightlife options, and hotels. The 224 rooms are pleasant and light-filled with big windows and great amenities, but they can get noise from neighboring rooms and hotel facilities. Most of the features are clustered together on the ninth floor and include a spa, a beauty salon, a lovely outdoor pool, and a well-equipped fitness center with a sauna. There are also three meeting rooms for rent, a business center, a restaurant with breakfast and lunch buffets, and tons of free parking. Travelers in Bangkok for shopping may want to also consider the Baiyoke Sky Hotel, located in the Pratunam shopping district.

Scene

Upper-middle-range tourist hotel with a dark lobby and atrium-style hallways

Bangkok Hotel Lotus Sukhumvit is an upper-middle-range city hotel. The entrance provides space for a small drive-up area for taxis out front and an outdoor gray-marble patio with a few chairs and ashtrays for smokers. Inside, the lobby is long and dark, with recessed lighting and a mix of gray-and-black marble and wood columns. There's a large rectangular two-tier fountain in the middle of the space with lots of purple lotus flowers. Rooms are situated around a separate atrium-style area, with terraces from each floor that look down on a pleasant installation with a pond-like fountain feature and a few small trees and shrubs. The hotel attracts travelers from around the world, with lots of tourists and business guests.

Location

Central location in Sukhumvit, a short walk from the main road and BTS stations

Bangkok Hotel Lotus Sukhumvit is located on Soi 33, just off the main road that runs along Sukhumvit. The area is busy day and night, with lots of restaurants, bars, street food vendors, spas, and illicit massage parlors. While the area is dominated by tall office buildings, hotels, and malls, there is a lovely green space, Benchasiri Park, a five-minute walk away. Phrom Phong and Asok BTS (skytrain) stations are each under 10 minutes away on foot. Most of the tourist attractions are located to the west of this neighborhood, including Jim Thompson House, about a half-hour away by skytrain (with a bit of walking at the end). Getting to the Grand Palace takes about the same amount of time to get to by car. Wat Arun is about a 35-minute taxi ride away. Suvarnabhumi Airport and Don Mueang Airport are each around 45 minutes to an hour away from the hotel by taxi.

Rooms

Pleasant rooms with big windows and well-stocked minibars, some with great city views

This hotel offers well-maintained Superior, Deluxe, and Premier Rooms, all with either single king or two-twin bed configurations. Decor is pleasant, with medium-wood parquet floors paired with light-wood desks and tables, olive-green plush chairs, and pops of orange in throw cushions, bed runners, and wastepaper baskets. Floor-to-ceiling windows allow plenty of natural light in (and offer great city views, particularly from higher floors), but also have blackout drapes for when guests need to nap in the daytime. Premier Rooms add daybed-style sofas that can double as extra beds for kids or smaller adults. All rooms come with safes, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with cable, minibars with large bottles of alcohol, and coffee- and tea-making facilities. Bathrooms are pleasantly large, with a mix of granite and marble. They're stocked with bathrobes, hairdryers, and decent toiletries (including shaving kits and toothpaste in Premier Rooms) along with shower/tub combos. Note that while rooms are pleasant overall, there have been some complaints of noise from other rooms.

Features

Fitness center with sauna, pool with kids' area, lobby coffeeshop, and Indian restaurant with 24-hour room service

This hotel offers a great assortment of facilities. On the ninth floor is a fitness center with cardio and weight-training equipment plus a sauna, as well as an adjacent outdoor swimming pool with a kids' splash area and lots of lounge chairs. Poolside drink service is available. There's also a lovely spa on this level with massage treatments available, plus a beauty salon offering hair and nail services. The main restaurant, Coco's Cafe, is also situated on the ninth floor and offers buffet service at breakfast and lunch, plus Indian food served a la carte for dinner. They also have regular evening entertainment courtesy of a locally based Indian band. There's a second dining outlet in the lobby, Le Boulanger Deli, which offers cakes, pastries, coffee drinks, and light snacks. Room service is available 24 hours a day. Business facilities at the Lotus consist of three meeting rooms that can be merged into one large ballroom, complete with audiovisual equipment and the option of catering services. There's also a business center with a small meeting space and computers with printers. Wi-Fi is free in rooms and throughout the hotel. There's a ton of free on-site parking.
