Bottom Line

Suly Resort and Spa is a mid-range hotel located a 20-minute shuttle ride from downtown Ubud. The hotel features a classic Balinese aesthetic and offers rice field views, two outdoor swimming pools, a vegetarian/vegan restaurant, a yoga shala, and spa. The 67 guest rooms range from standalone Deluxe Garden Rooms which feature huge floor-plans, Balinese interior stylings, and large balconies to more modern and streamlined hotel style rooms with contemporary interiors. Many rooms also have rice field views. Overall, the property is tranquil and serene but the hotel is a bit run down and aged. Nearby KajaNe Yangloni Private Boutique Health & Leisure Center also features rice field views and tropical grounds, but has newer rooms and better facilities -- though rates are higher.

Scene

Balinese stylings, gorgeous rice field views, and tranquil tropical ground

Suly Resort has a classic Balinese aesthetic with traditional red-brick facade archways, stone statues of Hindu deities dotted along the property, and breezy open-air common areas styled with local artwork and intricately carved details. The large property features manicured tropical grounds and rice field views. The main swimming pool is particularly scenic; it's perched along the rice fields and gardens. The pool is lined by a large wooden deck set with plenty of lounge chairs and wooden daybed cabanas.

Common areas include a roomy lobby space with comfy couches and a large breezy restaurant with Balinese decor. The restaurant overlooks a Balinese performance stage and rice fields. The hotel stays quiet and serene at most times of the day, though it can get crowded during lunch hours as the hotel hosts daily lunch and dance performances to tour groups who come to the hotel by the busload. Overall the hotel's setting, gardens, and scenic views create a tranquil and relaxing ambience, though the property is in need of serious maintenance and the facilities and common areas are quite dilapidated.

Location

Located in Mas village, a 20-minute drive from Ubud's downtown restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions

The hotel's located in Mas Village, around a 20-minute drive from downtown attractions like the Ubud Palace, the Ubud Handicrafts Market, the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, museums, restaurants, bars, and yoga schools. A free shuttle service from the hotel to Ubud makes trips into town fairly easy. Although, for those looking to sample the local cuisine there are a few small warungs, like Warung Teges and Babi Guling Ibu Oka, that have been serving authentic Balinese meals for decades. The Mas area is known for its traditional craftsman, artists, and woodworkers. There are numerous shops in the area selling selling handicrafts, wooden furniture, artworks, and statuary, though these are mostly for those looking to export from Bali. Transfers to Kuta, Seminyak, and the airport take around 80 minutes from the hotel.

Rooms

Spacious garden bungalows with Balinese decor and modern hotel style rooms with rice field views

Suly Resort has a variety of room options on offer with two distinct room styles: spacious standalone bungalow-style rooms set along the tropical grounds or modern hotel style rooms in a multi-story building. Rooms have views of either the rice fields or gardens and most include balconies. The Deluxe Garden Rooms feature a classic Balinese aesthetic, with red-brick facades and elegantly styled interiors that include marble floors, solid wood furniture, intricately carved ornamentation, and traditional decorations and artwork. Deluxe, Superior, Standard, and Standard (Rice Field View) Rooms are more more modern with minimalist contemporary stylings. The Superior and Standard Room types are fairly compact and streamlined, whereas Deluxe Rooms offer a bit more space and larger bathrooms. All rooms are outfitted with work tables and chairs, solid wooden beds with spring mattresses, and large wardrobes. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, kettles, and bottled water.

Bathrooms in most of the hotel-style room types are fairly tiny and cramped, with a standalone sink (no vanity counter) and a glassed-off shower cubicle with soap and shampoo dispensers. Deluxe Garden Room bathrooms offer more space and include a large vanity counter with a porcelain wash basin, a deep freestanding terrazzo soaking tub, and a separate shower. During our tour of the hotel we noticed some maintenance issues like peeling paint and musty bathrooms.

Features

Two outdoor swimming pools, a vegan restaurant, relaxing spa, yoga shala, and free Wi-Fi

Suly Resort features breezy common areas and a decent range of facilities. The standout feature is the large outdoor swimming pool perched along the rice fields. The pool is long enough for laps and includes a shallow section for kids. A second, smaller pool is located adjacent to the main pool and also has a nice garden setting and rice field views, but it's older and in need of repairs.

The restaurant is housed in a large open-air building with high wooden ceilings and classic Balinese interiors. Food is served all day, and the menu is mostly vegan and vegetarian. A simple a la carte breakfast menu is also offered at an additional cost.

Other facilities include a spacious semi open-air yoga pavilion, as well as a small spa that offers a range of beauty and massage treatments. For an additional charge, the hotel offers cultural activities like Balinese dance lessons, wood carving classes, kite making, and rice field treks. Regular dance and gamelan performances are held at the hotel. A free Ubud shuttle service operates daily and there is free on-site parking, plus free Wi-Fi.
