Bottom Line

Primera Hotel Seminyak is a 251-room, budget hotel located in the heart of Seminyak. It's situated along Dhyana Pura street, which is lined with restaurants, shops, gay bars and nightclubs, and is just a 10-minute walk to Seminyak Beach. The hotel's strongest attributes are its affordable rates and central location, though there are many bars nearby that play music late and the rooms are poorly insulated against noise. Decor is reasonably modern, but a little tacky, and some rooms show some wear and tear. In-room features include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi. A small pool, a restaurant and bar, and a simple spa round out the features. Those who'd prefer more of a boutique vibe might consider the Ivory Resort Seminyak, though it's farther from the beach and nightlife.

Scene

Decent budget hotel that's best for those looking to explore the area

Primera Hotel Seminyak's main strengths aren't its facilities or ambience, although for a hotel in this price range, what's on offer is better than many other similarly priced hotels in downtown Seminyak. Decor is modern throughout the hotel, and features bright, colorful, and sometimes tacky branding done in bold green and pink color schemes. The restaurant is a little more attractive, with large communal wooden tables and a bar featuring a long wooden counter top plus hardwood features that give it a rustic edge. There's also an alfresco dining section which features comfy rattan seating. Given its small footprint, the tiny pool is perhaps to be expected, and because it lacks any seating, it doesn't have the same buzz as many other nearby hotels. As such, the hotel is best for travelers who plan to spend their time out exploring and hanging out on the beach. Keep in mind that the immediate area can be noisy, and the hotel isn't insulated against the goings on nearby.

Location

A 10-minute walk to Seminyak Beach, surrounded by shops, bars, and restaurants

The hotel's central Seminyak location is ideal, and there are tons of dining, shopping, and nightlife options all around the hotel. The hotel's Dhyana Pura Street address puts it in the middle of Bali's gay nightlife, and the road is lined with bars and nightclubs that stay open late, meaning noise can be an issue. Seminyak Beach is only a 10-minute walk away. It's a little less hectic than nearby Kuta Beach, and is home to a nice selection of restaurants and bars like La Plancha, the stylish Cocoon Beach Club, and the casual Chez Gado Gado. Seminyak's Eat Street -- Jl. Kayu Aya -- is less than a 10-minute drive away and Jalan Petitenget, where the popular Potato Head Beach Club and many upmarket hotels are located, is a 15-minute drive away. Kuta Legian (Bali's nightclub district) as well as Waterbom Park are a 25-minute drive away and the airport usually takes 30 minutes to reach by car. However, travel times can take longer during peak traffic hours.

Rooms

Modern and minimalistic, but worn, featuring air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi

Rooms at the Primera Hotel Seminyak sport a minimalist, modern design, and feature the essentials at an affordable price point. However, don't expect any bells and whistles, as the rooms are a little cramped and do show wear and tear. The decor is bright and almost tacky, with pink accents on the doors, throw pillows, and large prints than hang behind the beds. Furniture in the rooms is made of cheap melamine and plastic, and in the Standard and Superior Rooms it's limited to a tiny work desk and one shelf that can barely fit a small suitcase.

Standard features include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, though only suites contain mini-fridges. Standard Rooms are a compact 193 square feet (18 square meters), while Superior Rooms are a little larger and feature roomy balconies (though are otherwise almost identical to Standard Rooms). Suite category rooms have additional perks including more shelving, larger TVs, comfy seating, and spacious bathrooms. Unfortunately, they lack balconies. Executive Suites also feature kitchenettes as well as living rooms.

Bathrooms in the Superior and Standard Rooms are basic and small -- the floors and walls are tilled in off-white and vanities feature black countertops and large mirrors. Soap dispensers, free toiletries, and slippers are available, and higher-category rooms have hairdryers. Bathrooms in the Junior and Executive Suite are roomier, and the dark gray tiles used throughout look a little sharp, although some of the showers had stained tiling.

Features

A small main pool, an affordably priced restaurant with streetside seating, and free Wi-Fi

Facilities on offer at the hotel are limited, but decent enough for gearing up in the morning or unwinding at night. Most guests are out at the beach during the day, which is understandable, as the pool is disappointing. It's small and shaded, and there are also only four lounge chairs set up around it, so seating is limited. A meeting room and simple spa are also available. Lime Restaurant serves affordably priced Asian and Western dishes and has a few distinct dining areas, including an indoor seating section with large communal wooden tables, as well as a bar and an alfresco dining area with comfy rattan seating. A breakfast buffet area is located by the pool, though it's not included in rooms rates. Wi-Fi is free throughout and parking spaces are available, though they are limited.
