Mahogany Hotel

Set alongside tiny local businesses and makeshift shacks with tin roofs, the Mahogany Hotel stands out for its cobblestone driveway and streamlined architecture. A big sign with the hotel name and its nature-inspired logo adorn one side of the building, setting the mood for a somewhat more style-oriented atmosphere than its surroundings may suggest. The lobby is airy and contemporary, with tons of natural wood accents, cute orange throw pillows with geometric patterns, and an eye-catching screen resembling the roots and branches of a mahogany tree separating the reception space from the main restaurant. The simple wooden tables in the dining room spill onto the pool deck, where a few cloud-gray couches with minimalist metal structures give the space a touch of style. The sports bar adheres to the same contemporary vibe, with a fashionable industrial-chic feel that draws heavily on exposed brick and metal-and-wood finishes. 

The combination of a fresh, contemporary look and functional, clean rooms, extensive meeting space, and easy access to corporate offices and the airport make the Mahogany a solid pick for business travelers. The pool, location within a short drive of several beach areas, and competitive rates draw some couples and families as well. Travelers seeking something with a bit more local charm may want to consider Ellie’s, a budget property located right across the street, complete with a great rooftop bar and a small pool. In this same price range, the Ion Bali Benoa is another good mid-range pick within walking distance of the beach. Those wanting to stay closer to the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center should check out the Grand Whiz Hotel Nusa Dua, although rooms at the Mahogany are in better shape overall. 

Mahogany Hotel is located right on the Airport Bypass, a busy thoroughfare connecting Nusa Dua and Kuta. There are several small convenience stores and a few local businesses around, but little else of general interest can be found within walking distance. Although a little isolated for leisure travelers, this location is convenient for those looking for a base to explore the southern part of Bali, as it is within a 20-minute drive of Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, and the many beaches in the southeast. Major attractions, such as the Water Blow and Uluwatu Temple, can be reached in 15 and 30 minutes by car, respectively. Proximity to the Toll Road also allows for easy access to other regions in Bali, including Sanur and Ubud. This is also a convenient location for business travelers, as it is a 10-minute drive from the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center, and 20 minutes from the Ngurah Rai International Airport. The hotel offers free shuttle service to the renowned Bali Collection mall several times per day, as well as airport transfers for a fee.

The hotel has 47 rooms, all decorated in a simple, contemporary style that combines white floors and walls with blond-wood furniture, colorful abstract art, and a neutral palette. With only the most basic furniture (desk, beds, closet, and bedside tables), the design is overall more functional than fashionable, but clean lines and caramel accent walls add style and make spaces feel fresh. There are four room types at the Mahogany, but the only difference between three of them is the views: Superior units overlook the road, Grand Superior are located on the top floor and have views of the neighborhood, while Deluxe Rooms feature views of the lagoon. At 270 square feet, these three room types are a little compact, but Family Rooms offer double the space and come with one double bed and a twin bed. 

Bathrooms are also compact but clean, with gray tiles throughout, spacious walk-in showers, and small round sinks over black counters. Basic toiletries such as shower gel and shampoo are provided in all rooms, along with toothbrushes, hand soap, and shower caps. All rooms are equipped with solid amenities, including air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, quality mattresses, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars, and electric kettles with free tea and coffee. Guests staying in Deluxe and Family Rooms get four free minibar items per day. 

A free breakfast buffet is served daily in the restaurant located off the lobby. The spread is small but decent, with hot and cold options ranging from banana pancakes and cereal, to eggs and sausages. Indonesian and international food is served throughout the day, along with a few small bites and drinks by the pool. The sports bar is a casual spot for a beer or a quick bite, and features outdoor seating in a quiet patio with a long communal table and a couple of long, padded benches. The pool is long enough for laps and has a wraparound deck with a few loungers and umbrellas. It gets lots of sun during the day, but there is also a lounge area with a few couches and tables under a roof for shade. 

The hotel has three meeting rooms, including one for up to 250 guests. Audiovisual equipment, such as wireless microphones, LCD projectors, and sound systems are available on request, along with flip charts and free Wi-Fi. The highlight of the events space at the Mahogany is the rooftop area, complete with a glass-enclosed wedding chapel with 360-degree views, and a lounge with a small bar and lots of seating. Unfortunately, the rooftop is only open for private events, and regular guests aren’t allowed to access it.
