Bottom Line

The 41-room Bali Agung Village is a good mid-range choice in the heart of Seminyak, just a five-minute walk from Seminyak Beach. Traditional Balinese rooms have air-conditioning plus furnished terraces in addition to walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads. However, some rooms are small and have tired style. The on-site restaurant and poolside bar also offer good value for the money, and there are freebies including breakfast, sometimes sluggish Wi-Fi, babysitting, and an area shuttle. The hotel isn't the best choice for those in need of pampering -- for that, consider the Villa Kubu, with its modern rooms, spa, and butler service, but expect to spend far more money.

Scene

A traditional Balinese hotel with thatched roofs and a lovely garden

Indonesian statues lead to the Bali Agung Village, a traditional, tranquil Balinese hotel with thatched roofs and wood carvings set under tall palm trees. Earth tones, high ceilings, and live plants define the homey, authentic Balinese common areas, from the lobby to the restaurant -- many of which are open air. A large garden with statues, trees, and flowers adds to the old-fashioned feel. It could be called an oasis, and has a lot of character in an area of Bali quickly being converted into sleek, modern properties. Most guests are vacationing families and couples.

Location

In Seminyak’s city center, a five-minute walk to Seminyak Beach

The Bali Agung Village is in the center of Seminyak, in an alley off of a traffic-laden street, surrounded by nightlife and restaurants. Seminyak is less wild than Kuta, but isn't a tranquil tropical getaway by any stretch of the imagination. Seminyak Beach is five-minutes away on foot. Seminyak Square is about five minutes away by car, while Legian Beach and Double Six Beach take around 10 minutes to reach. Other popular destinations like Kuta Beach and Poppies Lane, Discovery Shopping Mall, and Waterbom Park are all at least 20 minutes away by car. Ngurah Rai International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Authentic Balinese design with rainfall showerheads and terraces, but some dated decor

Standard Villas and Deluxe Villas have a simple, traditional Balinese style with dark furniture and local art set against patterned bed runners and pillows. White tile floors give the rooms a spacious effect, and accents like the thatched ceiling in Deluxe Villas, or hand-painted doors and shutters, give rooms an authentic quality. All air-conditioned rooms have 32-inch flat-screen TVs and minibars plus coffeemakers and free bottled water. Bathrobes and slippers are provided, and all have rooms have furnished terraces, some with garden views. Deluxe Villas have handsome four-poster beds with silk depictions of Hindu epics built into the headboard. Light tile covers most of the en-suite bathrooms while glassed-in showers feature rainfall showerheads. However, some rooms are small, with old-fashioned furniture and a dated style.

Features

Outdoor pool with poolside bar, on-site restaurant, free babysitting, and free but spotty Wi-Fi

A small, square outdoor pool is shrouded in greenery, and has an adjacent kids' pool in addition to a poolside bar with cocktails and beer. Indonesian, Western, and Chinese cuisines are served at the on-site restaurant, and there’s live entertainment on certain nights. The included breakfast features Western and Balinese dishes and gets average feedback. Freebies include babysitting, Wi-Fi, outdoor parking, and an area shuttle, and both the computer station and concierge services are open 24 hours a day. However, the Wi-Fi connection is poor, and there is no spa or fitness center.
