Bottom Line

Rosarito Beach Hotel is a three-pearl beachfront hotel in Rosarito. There are lovely outdoor pools, hot tubs, spa, and a gym to keep guests entertained when not on the beach. The Mexican restaurant, Azteca, offers a traditional breakfast and there's karaoke in the Rosa and Rita Bar. Wi-Fi is free, but pretty spotty throughout. The 500 rooms vary -- some have dated styles and others are more modern, but all feature flat-screen TVs and balconies, while Suites add air-conditioning and kitchenettes. Most hotels in Rosarito offer the same experience: slightly dated rooms with inconsistent Wi-Fi on or near the beach. However, this historical hotel has hosted the likes of Marilyn Monroe. If you’re willing to spend a bit extra, try Las Olas Resort & Spa which has a more upscale vibe and all units come with kitchenettes.

Scene

Historic hotel with a traditional Mexican style and a long list of past celebrity guests

The Rosarito Beach Hotel is a three-pearl hotel with a long history. It opened in 1925 and has hosted several old Hollywood stars like Rita Hayworth, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, and Orson Wells. Today, it’s a busy hotel with 500 rooms, so it’s no surprise that there’s sometimes long waits at the front desk and issues with booking. There’s a typical Mexican theme to the decor. The lobby has painted murals of local scenes on the walls and ceilings and beautiful Mexican textiles on the floors and columns. Wooden ceilings and a wooden staircase with iron railings speak to the historic nature of the hotel. The grounds are fairly large with green lawns, tropical trees, pools, and concrete paths that lead to the beach. Couples and families are drawn to this property for its great location and wide range of amenities.

Location

Beachfront location surrounded by restaurants and bars

Rosarito Beach Hotel has a fantastic location directly on the beach in Rosarito. Guests don’t have to go far for entertainment as there are restaurants and shops on surrounding streets that are easily within walking distance. The Baja Art Gallery is a seven-minute drive away. For a day trip, Tijuana takes 35 minutes to reach by car. It’s a 15-minute drive to Christ of the Sacred Heart. Tijuana International Airport takes 40 minutes to reach by car.

Rooms

Rooms have balconies, flat-screen TVs, and no air-conditioning

Rooms here vary in decor and how recently they were renovated. All have tiled floors and warm color tones of brown, cream, and orange. Most rooms have worn and dated wooden furniture, though the Suites and the Penthouse are the most updated and have streamlined furniture. Standard rooms are outfitted with basic amenities like flat-screen TVs, bottled water, and balconies. They lack coffee- and tea-making facilities, minibars, and air-conditioning. Timeshares and Suites have air-conditioning and kitchenettes with fridges, sinks, microwaves, stovetops, ovens, and dishwashers. Though the hotel has free Wi-Fi, it’s not always reliable in the rooms. Most bathrooms have shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and toiletries. Suites have separate showers and tubs. Many of the rooms have lovely, uninterrupted ocean views.

Features

Beach, pools, hot tub, and a Mexican restaurant

Rosarito Beach Hotel has an excellent beachfront location with umbrellas on the sand for guests to enjoy. There are also outdoor pools, hot tubs, and children’s pools, though not all guests have access to all pools. The spa provides massages and beauty treatments, while the modern gym -- which has mostly cardio equipment and some weight machines -- is a nice extra. Outdoor activities include a basketball court and a kids’ club. Each morning, there’s a hot traditional Mexican breakfast in the restaurant. For lunch and dinner, there’s Azteca, a restaurant that offers Mexican and seafood cuisine. Rosa and Rita Bar has drinks and karaoke. Business travelers can take advantage of five meeting rooms and event spaces. Wi-Fi is free throughout, though guests note that it’s spotty in many places. Paid parking is available.
