20-minute drive to downtown Nassau (a pro for some)
West Wind
Club II is a three-pearl hotel located on popular Cable Beach, a 20-minute
drive from downtown Nassau and within easy walking distance of restaurants. The hotel is composed of 54 two-bedroom villas,
all of which include big living areas and full kitchens. The clean villas have
an inviting home-away-from-home feel, but the decor could use
an update. The on-site restaurant and outdoor pools are pretty average. Expect to pay extra for breakfast and Wi-Fi. As an alternative, Sandyport
Beaches Resort also offers beach access and rooms with kitchens, plus
the resort has a bit more personality.
Scene
Generic time-share resort that mainly attracts repeat guests
The grounds
of West Wind Club II are reminiscent of a small gated community, with homey
matching villas lined up in neat rows, and spotless sidewalks winding between
well-manicured lawns. The compact neighborhood appearance is appropriate for a
hotel where many guests have become almost as familiar with one another as
actual neighbors. A large number of guests at West Wind are time-share owners
who have been returning here every year at the same time for decades. You’ll
see a few families, but mostly the crowd is dominated by couples over 50, and younger guests and those coming for one-off stays may feel a touch out of place among so many regulars. Aside from its great beach, West
Wind’s main appeal seems to lie in its safety and familiarity for returning
guests.
Location
Located on Cable Beach, surrounded by high-rise hotels
West Wind
Club II is set along West Bay Street, where its neighbors are mainly other
hotels. The hotel backs onto Cable Beach, one of the island’s busiest and most
scenic beaches. Aside from the beach, the area doesn’t offer any particularly
interesting attractions. The surrounding hotels include plenty of dining
options, plus a liquor store, a grocery store, and familiar chains like
Starbucks and Subway, which can be reached within a 15-minute walk. A casino is
found next door at the Melia Nassau Beach Resort. The hotel
is less than a 15-minute drive from the airport, as well as about a 20-minute
drive from the shops and attractions of downtown Nassau. The Fish Fry at Arawak
Cay can be reached in 10 minutes by car. A jitney bus stop right outside the
hotel offers cheap transportation to downtown Nassau.
Rooms
Villas with separate living rooms, full kitchens, and private balconies or patios
The West
Wind Club II features practical and bland two-bedroom villas. Some are arranged over a single floor, while in others the
second bedroom is found in a compacted loft area. Bedrooms are drab, with dark
bed skirts, gold bed runners, and wicker headboards. Simple bathrooms have
shower/tub combos, round sinks, and older fixtures. Off-brand bars of soap are
provided.The living
areas are brighter; they're decorated in pastel green and blue color schemes. Living
areas have flat-screen TVs, roomy sofas, and several soft armchairs. Kitchens
with off-white cabinets include dishwashers, full-size refrigerators, and ovens
with four-burner stovetops. They’re well stocked with cookware and cutlery,
along with appliances such as coffeemakers and blenders. Large patios or
balconies feature views of the ocean or one of the hotel’s two pools. Be aware that past guests have complained about occasional maintenance and cleanliness issues in the villas.
Features
Two medium-sized pools, open-air restaurant and bar, as well as direct access to Cable Beach
Like most hotels in the area, West Wind Club II has features focused on lolling by the beach or pool. The hotel features direct access to Cable Beach, an appealing four-mile stretch of golden sand. The strip of beach directly in front of West Wind Club II is quiet, but there are a number of big hotels found farther along the coast where the atmosphere can get quite lively. The hotel also has two octagon-shaped outdoor pools, which are attractively framed by villas, palm
trees, and the hotel’s landscaped lawn. The pools are surrounded by soft blue
lounge chairs, set on a concrete deck that offers little shade. These two
pools bookend the hotel’s open-air international restaurant. Serving breakfast,
lunch, and dinner, the restaurant is simple and seating is offered at tables
or high-tops along the bar. A pool table is set in one corner. The lobby has two computer workstations with two printers for guests' use. There's also a souvenir shop that sells T-shirts and sunscreen. The hotel also has no-frills guest laundry facilities. Wi-Fi is available for a fee, and free parking is offered
on-site.
