Bottom Line

Perched on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, Unique Village is a 14-room hotel in North Palmetto Point on Eleuthera. The two-and-a-half-pearl property has a simple and relaxed vibe throughout. It's a humble, homey spot that includes an open-air restaurant serving casual grill fare with a Bahamian influence, a compact pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, and a quiet beachfront along the pink sands of Poponi Beach. Rooms are spacious, with simple island decor that's bright and pleasant, and all have air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and an outdoor terrace -- many facing the ocean. To be closer to the island's attractions, Villa Allamanda has a similar price tag with a more convenient location in Governor’s Harbour, though it has fewer amenities.

Scene

Secluded and laid-back hotel with just enough for a pleasant beachfront getaway

Unique Village feels secluded and laid-back -- welcome qualities in any hotel, especially one on exclusive Eleuthera. The resort is set off a quiet, back road overlooking the pink sands of Poponi Beach, which is a major draw for the guests who make their way out here. When they're not relaxing on the beach, guests can be found by the outdoor pool, which is typically quiet as well. With a handful of wooden lounge chairs in greens, blues, and reds, and a gazebo, it’s easy to find a quiet spot to sunbathe and relax. All common areas have a similar relaxed vibe, with white wicker furniture bedecked in floral cushions, wooden chairs in greens, reds, and yellows, and plenty of open spaces looking out over the gardens and ocean. Located farther back from Queens Highway and with only 14 rooms, there isn’t much socializing done at Unique Village, but the on-site restaurant is open to the public for casual grill fare. However, we didn't spot any crowds during our visit. Expect to see mostly couples here, though a few families pass through as well.

Location

On Poponi Beach's pink sands, a 25-minute drive to Rock Sound Airport

Situated on a quiet, back road a five-minute drive from Queens Highway -- the main road on Eleuthera -- Unique Village has lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean and the pink sand beaches of Poponi Beach. There isn't much to do in the area, and nothing but the beach and a few other hotels nearby. A car will be helpful for those who want to explore, particularly since there is no public transportation on Eleuthera and walking is not recommended. Governor’s Harbour, Eleuthera’s capital, is a 30-minute drive from Unique Village, and has a grocery store, shops, a few restaurants, and an ATM. Sky Beach Club, another local hot spot, is a 20-minute drive away. Unique Village does not provide airport shuttle service, however, Rock Sound Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel. Governour’s Harbor Airport is a 30-minute drive, and North Eleuthera will take an hour and a half to reach from Unique Village.

Rooms

Spacious and homey rooms, many with views of the Atlantic Ocean

Across all categories, rooms have a simple look composed of homey island decor. With plain white walls, wood paneling foyers and trim, the accent colors throughout tend towards greens and corals giving a little pop to otherwise basic looking rooms. In some rooms, the humble decor feels a little dated, possibly due to the abundance of rattan, but everything is well kept. Rooms are spacious and clean, with plenty of outdoor sitting space; the second floor rooms offering lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean.

The hotel has a few categories of rooms available, from traditional hotel rooms with one king-size bed or two queen-size beds, to more spacious One- and Two-Bedroom Villas with full kitchens and living rooms. All rooms have plenty of sitting and storage space including wooden bi-fold closets. Full kitchens in the villas include microwaves, stoves, ovens, and plenty of storage space. The coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and beach towels are nice extras that are available in all rooms, as is air-conditioning. Bathrooms are clean and of moderate size with shower/tub combos. There is adequate counter space, large mirrors, and windows with natural light in all of the bathrooms. A full range of toiletries and towels are provided, as well as a small hairdryer.

Features

Open-air restaurant overlooking pink sand beach, with an ample pool terrace

Unique Village offers an open-air restaurant, pink sand beaches, and an ample pool terrace that round out a solid list of features for a two-and-a-half pearl hotel. The restaurant overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and has a wrap-around dining terrace. Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner of casual Bahamian grill fare, expect to see conch chowder, salads, and lots of fresh seafood on the menu. With plenty of seating at white wooden tables adorned with green and white tablecloths, and high wooden ceilings, the restaurant is spacious, yet relaxed. The bar is separate from the restaurant and has an equally laid-back feel to it with wooden high-back stools, wood-paneled walls, and wicker couches. There's a flat-screen TV in the bar as well, for anyone interested in sports or news.

Poponi Beach is just down a wooden staircase behind the hotel. With a handful of thatched sunshades, there are some places for guests to lay out and sunbathe. The beach is rarely crowded despite being well-known by locals for the stunning pink sands As an alternative, the pool terrace is large and overlooks the ocean. With plenty of green, red, orange, and yellow wooden lounge chairs, guest have enough room to spread out and relax in the sun. There is a small gazebo with a table and some lounge chairs for those who want to get out of the sun as well. Additional amenities include plenty of free parking and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
