The upper-middle-range Hotel Marina Atlantico is a bright, contemporary property across from the harbor in Ponta Delgada. Its setting overlooking cruise ships and a 10-minute drive from the airport is convenient, but some guests have complained about noise issues at night. The 184 rooms are up-to-date, albeit generic, outfitted with brown and blue decor, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Also on the downside, travelers have complained of poor shower curtains that get water on the floors and no kettles in rooms. A sizable indoor pool, spa treatment rooms and a sauna, and small gym are on-site, as is an all-day restaurant serving free continental breakfasts. Travelers wanting to stay somewhere with an outdoor pool may prefer feature-packed Sao Miguel Park Hotel.
Scene
Bright and contemporary, albeit generic, hotel popular with couples
Hotel Marina Atlantico attracts largely vacationing couples with its excellent location near the sights, harbor, and airport of Ponta Delgada. Although interiors are contemporary and well-maintained, the look is generic and underwhelming, with lots of neutral tones in the form of wood paneling, marble floors, and gray or beige seating. Nevertheless, floor-to-ceiling windows in multiple spaces provide ample natural light, and occasionally, views of cruise ships at the port. There's not a lot that sticks out here, but all the expected amenities and comfy rooms make this is a popular option for the area.
Location
Next to Ponta Delgada’s harbor, a 10-minute walk from the town center
The hotel's location is a big draw, being within easy reach of all Ponta Delgada has to offer. It has a prime setting across from the harbor, where a public pool can be found. Some travelers will swim in the ocean, though the cleanliness of the water is questionable. Church of St. Sebastian, set at the center of the town, is a 10-minute walk away, as are several restaurants and additional sights. The downside of the hotel’s location, however, is that it can get noisy from ships and bars, and occasionally barking dogs, at night. João Paulo II Airport is a 10-minute drive away.
Rooms
Well-maintained rooms with AC, minibars, and desks
Similar to common areas, rooms are outfitted in neutral tones and largely generic decor, though some nautical-themed accents add character. Expect dark-wood furniture, blue-and-brown striped curtains and carpet, and bedding, and sailboat artwork. Many rooms have furnished balconies that face the harbor, while those facing inland have small windows that make rooms feel dark. Also on the downside, past guests have complained of noise from nearby bars, ships, and barking dogs. There have been reports of poor shower curtains that stick to guests and let water onto the floor. All units have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, desks, and safes, but no kettles in standard rooms. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos, free toiletries, and hairdryers. Suites add separate living spaces, kettles and coffeemakers, and jetted tubs.
Features
Good-sized indoor pool, spa treatments, and free breakfasts
The Hotel Marina Atlantico offers all the necessary amenities, though all are on the average side. While there's no outdoor pool, a good-sized indoor swimming pool is available, next to a hot tub. It's part of the hotel’s spa, which also offers a range of massage and beauty treatments, a sauna, and salon for hair and nail services. A small gym has some free weights and cardio machines. An all-day restaurant is housed in a refined space, and it serves Portuguese meals for lunch and dinner. All rates include free well-regarded continental buffet breakfasts. Plus, a bar serves drinks and light snacks. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, and there is secure underground parking for a fee. A meeting space and sundries shop are also on-site.
