Bottom Line

The three-and-a-half-pearl DoubleTree Suites by Hilton - Austin is situated in the city's downtown business district, right across from the grounds of the state capitol and about a 10-minute walk from UT - Austin. The hotel's 188 suites are spacious with tasteful, if generic, contemporary decor, and come with separate living and sleeping areas, and kitchenettes with full-size fridges and dishwashers. The hotel has an on-site restaurant, and business- and family-friendly amenities like meeting rooms and kids' menus. There's also an outdoor pool and gym, but both are small, and extra fees -- for Wi-Fi, parking, and breakfast -- can add up. Guests looking for something in the area with more character might consider Hotel Ella, housed a historic mansion.

Scene

Tasteful, business friendly all-suite chain hotel

The 15-story, brown-brick high-rise that houses this multi-national chain hotel is as run-of-the-mill as it gets. Inside, the parquet-floored entryway, paired with wood-trimmed walls and columns, is perhaps the most unique feature. There are tiled alcoves with seating areas on one side, and a reception desk on the other. Tasteful as spaces here are, they smack of a chain hotel: patterned wall-to-wall carpeting, faux-leather upholstered dining chairs, and dark-wood laminate furniture. Due to the location, business guests are main clientele, but longer stay travelers and families also make use of the hotel's spacious suites.

Location

In Downtown Austin near the Texas State Capitol and UT Austin.

The hotel is situated on a busy main road in Austin's Downtown business district, just a block from the grounds of the Texas State Capitol. The capitol itself is within a five-minute walk, while the University of Texas at Austin is reachable in as little as 10 minutes on foot. Restaurants are within walking distance of the property, including several that line Guadalupe Street farther north, about a 10-minute walk. Austin's trendy bar, coffeeshop, and music scene is centered along 6th Street, about a 15- to 20-minute walk from the hotel. There's also a bus stop right across the street from the property for easy access to locations farther out. - Eight-minute walk to Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum

  • 14-minute walk to Frank Erwin Center
  • 22-minute walk to Austin Convention Center
  • 15 minutes to Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium via public transit
  • 25 minutes to Barton Springs Pool via public transit
  • 25 minutes to LBJ Presidential Library via public transit
  • 40 minutes to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport via public transit

Rooms

Suites with separate living areas, fully equipped kitchenettes, and spacious bathrooms

This all-suite hotel features one- and two-bedroom suites with fully equipped kitchenettes and separate living areas. Decor is clean and tasteful, with a neutral color palette of creams and browns. There's dark-toned, wood-laminate furniture, patterned wall-to-wall carpeting, and large wood- and faux-leather headboards. It's a standard chain-hotel generic look that's contemporary and comfortable. The suites are spacious, with separate bedrooms and living areas that usually feature sofa beds, 32-inch flat-screen TVs, and desks with ergonomic chairs, which can double as dining areas. Separate kitchens are equipped with full-size fridges and dishwashers, microwaves, toasters, small sinks, coffeemakers, and dishes, but there are no ovens, and stovetops are only available on request. Bathrooms tend to be quite roomy, with wide vanities, shower/tub combos, and Crabtree & Evelyn bath products. Executive Suites, situated on the 15th floor, feature furnished balconies and great city views, along with larger TVs and stovetops.

Features

Dining and wellness facilities including an outdoor pool -- but extra fees add up

This DoubleTree offers a range of amenities that guests expect from a mid-size chain hotel at this pearl level. The 15th Street Cafe serves up casual American fare with a Southwest influence for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there's a bar and lounge that's open in the late afternoon and into the evening. For breakfast, guests can choose from a la carte, continental, or full buffet options, the latter of which features hot items like eggs and pancakes in addition to the standard pastries, cereals, and bagels. Breakfast gets mixed reviews -- it's standard chain-hotel fare -- and costs an extra. The hotel offers room service from the morning and into the evening and guests get a free warm cookie on arrival, a Hilton trademark.Wellness facilities at the hotel include a narrow outdoor pool and a small hot tub, surrounded by a brick-and-wood patio with loungers. The pool is nice, but not huge, and gets full sun all day. The on-site gym lacks character and is cramped, but there's cardio equipment, a full rack of dumbbells, a weigh-lifting bench, and medicine balls. The hotel also has flexible meeting and event space. For business travelers, there's a narrow, windowless business center with ergonomic chairs, a few desktop computers, a printer, and an ATM machine. For those traveling with children, there are kids' menus, high chairs, cribs, and coin-operated laundry facilities. The hotel offers free shuttle service with two miles of the hotel. Guests complain about extra per-day feels for valet-only parking and for Wi-Fi (which is only free for Hilton HHonors members). Pets are allowed for an extra per-stay fee.
