The Quality Hotel Parnell is a three-pearl property located in the attractive residential area of Parnell. It's walking distance from restaurants, shops, and the waterfront, but downtown Auckland is about 10 minutes away by car. The 105 rooms are modern but lack character, and include standard options and apartments with full kitchens -- most have views of the city and harbor. Gladstones Restaurant serves continental fare for all meals and has a full bar. There aren't other features except for eight conference rooms suitable for small and large events. Overall, this is a good option for business travelers and tourists who want a modern property located outside of the city center. For similar rates, Auckland City Hotel-Hobson St offers a location in the Central Business District and provides free passes to an off-site gym and pool.
Scene
Modern and pleasant, without much interior common space
The Quality Parnell doesn't offer much in the way of scene. The white building has a typical chain-style look from the outside, with exterior hallways and simple shrubbery. Sliding glass doors lead into the small lobby, which houses a plain white reception desk and a row of wicker chairs set against a window. However, the grounds extend for three-and a-half acres and the surrounding upscale residential neighborhood is a pleasant place to walk around in. Guests can also head to the hotel's restaurant and bar, Gladstones, which has a quaint living room vibe with modern striped wallpaper, wooden and wicker furniture, and cozy dining nooks lit by opulent chandeliers. Historic photos decorate the walls, and the sleek white bar has flat-screen TVs for sports fans. Most guests are couples and families looking for a quiet place to stay outside the city center. Business travelers drawn to the range of meeting rooms are also common guests.
Location
In residential Parnell, 10 minutes outside downtown Auckland
Parnell is an upscale residential neighborhood located a nine-minute walk from historic Parnell Village, a tourist-friendly strip of restaurants, coffee shops, and art galleries. This is a fairly quiet area about 10 minutes' drive or 15 to 20 minutes by public transportation to Downtown Auckland and the Central Business District. However, there are some worthwhile attractions nearby, such as Parnell Baths, a public swimming pool that's about 15 minutes away on foot. Dove-Myer Robinson Park, home to the impressive Parnell Rose Gardens, is less than 10 minutes' walk from the hotel. Auckland Hospital and the University of Auckland are less than 10 minutes away by car. The Auckland War Memorial Museum is an 20-minute walk or six-minute drive away. Auckland Airport is about a 25-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Clean and modern but a little spare
Rooms and serviced apartments at the Quality Hotel Parnell are in two different wings, north-facing and south-facing. North-facing rooms have city and harbor views, and most also have balconies. Decor in both wings is similar and mostly plain, with solid gray carpeting and plain white walls decorated with black-and-white photography. There are some splashes of bright red or mustard yellow in bed runners and pillows, but otherwise everything is white, beige, or gray. Apartments have one or two bedrooms and full kitchens (or kitchenettes in some) so are convenient for longer-term guests and families. All rooms have air-conditioning, mini-fridges, coffee- and tea-making facilities, flat-screen TVs with five Sky Channels and DVD players, and free Wi-Fi. Plain white bathrooms are a little dated and have shower stalls or large tubs and separate showers. Basic toiletries are provided.
Features
Restaurant and bar, plus conference facilities
Features are limited here. The on-site Gladstones Restaurant is open to the public and hotel guests and offers a variety of breakfast options, including a full menu and a small coffee shop/cafe with outdoor seating. Lunch and dinner are served daily and the menu is a mix of casual fare like burgers, pastas, and grilled meat and fish. It also has full bar and often has sports playing on the TVs. The hotel has eight conference facilities for small and large groups, cocktail functions, banquet meals, and other gatherings. Guest laundry facilities are on-site and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
