Bottom Line

The Hampton Inn and Suites Atlanta Downtown combines comfortable accommodations with a central location within walking distance to Centennial Olympic Park and MARTA Peachtree Center Station. Housed in a historic building that opened in 1927, the lower-middle-range hotel has an impressive lobby that seamlessly combines old and new touches. Free breakfast, meeting space, laundry room, fitness center, and nearby parking at reasonable rates are among the highlights. But, there’s no pool, the fitness center is small, and parking can fill up fast. Rooms are comfortable and tastefully decorated, but only suites include mini-fridges and microwaves. As an alternative, the nearby Holiday Inn Express & Suites Atlanta Downtown, where breakfast also is free and standard rooms include mini-fridges and microwaves.

Scene

A modern chain hotel with a striking lobby that’s housed in a historic building

This stately, eight-story brick building was built in 1927 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s in the heart of one of America’s most vibrant business districts, so it bustles with activity year-round from convention delegates and other business travelers. It also hosts many leisure travelers who are attending events at the nearby Phillips Arena or Georgia Dome, or simply in town to see the sights. The impressive public spaces are a handsome mix of old and new. Modern furniture in bright colors and laminate wood floors accompany original mosaic tile and the building’s vintage brass mail box. A small area adjacent to the registration desk soars eight floors to a glass atrium. The breakfast area is exceptionally nice, with large windows and striking black-and-white checkerboard tile floors. Lovely chandeliers and wall sconces sport Art Deco designs.

Location

Centrally located in downtown Atlanta, near Centennial Olympic Park

The Hampton Inn is centrally located in a historic brick building in downtown Atlanta, just a three-minute walk from the Centennial Olympic Park and six minutes on foot from the MARTA Peachtree Center Station and AmericasMart Atlanta. It’s a busy and generally a safe area that’s surrounded by other hotels, restaurants, and office towers. Phillips Arena is a nine-minute walk. The Georgia Aquarium, Georgia Dome, World of Coca-Cola, and Georgia World Congress Center are approximately 12 minutes away on foot. The campus of Georgia State University is nine minutes by train or an 11-minute walk. Travel times by car or public transit to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are approximately 25 minutes, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Tastefully decorated but a bit small, with coffeemakers and free Wi-Fi

Crimson is the feature color in these tastefully decorated but simple rooms. The bold color is used on accent walls, benches, and subtle stripes on the dark brown carpet. The other walls and duvets are white, and the drapes are solid brown. The matching wood headboards and desk furniture have an espresso finish. Modern, multi-color art decorates the walls. Standard rooms (King and Double Queen) are a bit small, with only office chairs and small benches for seating. But, generously-sized windows keep the rather dark color palette from being gloomy. Larger, two-room Suites are available with separate living rooms that have sleeper sofas, wet bars, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Standard amenities in all units include coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, lap desks, and free Wi-Fi.Bathrooms are averages in size, with roomy granite vanities and excellent lighting, but drab yellow acrylic frames the shower/tub combos. Some rooms feature nice views of the Centennial Olympic Park or city skyline, while others simply face other buildings. Ambient traffic noise can be heard, but it’s less noticeable in rooms on higher floors. Most past guests report their rooms as clean, but some noted minor housekeeping and maintenance issues ranging from dirty and worn carpet to malfunctioning TVs and air-conditioning units.

Features

Free hot breakfast, fitness center, event space, laundry room, convenience store, and free Wi-Fi

This downtown Hampton Inn features the chain’s popular free breakfast buffet that includes eggs, breakfast meats, and other hot dishes. It also offers to-go breakfast bags for guests on the run. The 24/7 Suite Shop in the lobby sells sundries, snacks, soft drinks, and various microwaveable meals. Free coffee is available all day, and free newspapers are offered on weekdays. The fitness center has free weights as well as two treadmills, an elliptical machine, and a stationary bicycle. For business travelers, there are meeting facilities for up to 75 people as well as a business center with two computers and a printer in a dedicated space. Wi-Fi is free as well. Valet dry cleaning and laundry services are available. The hotel has a coin-operated guest laundry room, but it only has one washer/dryer set. Parking is offered in an adjacent public lot at reasonable rates, but it can fill up at peak times.
