This 250-room DoubleTree by Hilton is an upper-middle-range corporate hotel located right off I-285, offering easy driving access to Perimeter Mall, several Fortune 500 company headquarters, and the SunTrust Park. Contemporary rooms feature great amenities such as free Wi-Fi, coffeemakers, and mini-fridges, plus modern bathrooms -- but there have been some complaints of poor maintenance, including faulty AC units. The restaurant serves up tasty Southern comfort food and is a popular spot for a bite and drink in the evening. The spacious fitness center is equipped with enough cardio and strength-training machines for a full workout, while the heated outdoor pool is a great perk year-round. On the downside, being a 20-minute drive from Downtown Atlanta may not be ideal for leisure travelers. Those on a tighter budget may prefer Holiday Inn Express & Suites Atlanta N-Perimeter Mall Area.
Scene
Chain hotel with business location and modern interiors
Housed in a rather unattractive brick structure that feels more like an old office building than a hotel, the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Perimeter Dunwoody does not make a great first impression. Interiors, however, are contemporary and stylish after full renovations in 2017. The atrium-style lobby is inviting and spacious, outfitted with lots of low-lying seating in neutral hues, faux-leather armchairs, wooden slatted ceiling screens, and an eye-catching combination of black-and-white walls. The restaurant and bar, located adjacent to the lobby, has a similar vibe, with dark wooden floors, black-and-white seating, and a sleek, curved bar set against a backlit, mosaic-style partition wall.Business travelers and large groups constitute a significant portion of the clientele here, so the overall feel is corporate, but big rooms, free self-parking, and free shuttle service make it a decent pick for families and couples who don’t mind being away from the action. Travelers seeking something a tad more upscale may prefer Le Meridien Atlanta Perimeter, which is right across the street from Perimeter Mall. Leisure guests wanting to stay closer to major attractions in Downtown Atlanta should consider the Hilton Atlanta, which generally has similar rates as well as contemporary rooms, a small pool, and excellent dining options.
Location
Off I-285, in Atlanta’s edge city of Dunwoody
The hotel is located right off I-285 (informally called the Perimeter), adjacent to a gas station and surrounded by corporate parks and suburban residences. While this locale is better suited for business travelers who have meetings in the area than for leisure visitors, the hotel offers free shuttle service within a five-mile radius, including to a MARTA station, which puts attractions in the Downtown area about an hour away. The drive to the center takes about 20 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic. Famous Perimeter Mall, home to tons of restaurants and shops, is just a five-minute drive away, as is Murphey Candler Park. SunTrust Park stadium can be reached in about 15 minutes by car. Atlanta International Airport is about a half-hour drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Contemporary rooms with great amenities, though there have been reports of maintenance issues
The hotel’s 250 rooms were fully renovated in 2017 and have a fresh, contemporary feel. Though mostly corporate, decor is pleasant, with a soothing palette of grays and browns, padded headboards, and modular work desks. Some rooms have a few extra touches that add style, including brown textured accent walls and low-slung leather-like coffee tables with matching throw pillows. Starting at 261 square feet, rooms are spacious, and all have big windows that add visual space. Views, however, vary: while some offer street views, a few overlook the atrium, which some guests have found annoying, as there is sometimes live music in the lobby bar until the evening. On the other hand, rooms facing the interstate may be subject to traffic noise. Each room is equipped with a good array of amenities, including coffeemakers, large flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Well-reviewed Sweet Dream beds are topped with several pillows and light duvets. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Standard King Rooms are outfitted with pullout sofa beds, and suites have separate living areas and microwaves. Deluxe units come with full-sized fridges. Bathrooms are contemporary and clean, featuring either large walk-in showers with glass screens or shower/tub combos with curved curtain rods. Guests have two main complaints about the rooms: dim lighting and maintenance issues, in particular slow drains and faulty, loud air-conditioning units.
Features
Solid restaurant, room service, heated outdoor pool, and meeting space
A varied breakfast with hot and cold options is served every morning for a fee in a spacious room off the lobby. Lunch, dinner, and snacks are available at the adjacent Southern Grove, which serves up Southern comfort food and drinks in the atrium. Room service is provided during the restaurant’s opening hours only. A small market in the lobby sells snacks, drinks, and sundries. Additionally, the typical DoubleTree warm cookies are provided at check-in. A great perk of this DoubleTree is the heated outdoor pool, which is open year-round and features a handful of loungers as well as free towels. As a hotel that caters mostly to business travelers, the DoubleTree by Hilton Atlanta Perimeter Dunwoody offers a comprehensive array of business-friendly amenities, including 12,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, catering services, and a business center with free printing services. Breakout spaces are available for small groups, and there is a ballroom for up to 700 guests. Pets are not allowed.
