Smoke-free property (a con for some)
Small swimming pool is more like a bathtub
A busy road separates the hotel from the seafront, and traffic noise can travel to the rooms
Decor is bland
A mid-range hotel with 38 rooms over five stories, Tropical Hotel is advertised as being a beachfront hotel, but in fact, a busy six-lane road separates the hotel from the pebbly sand. Thankfully, the traffic noise doesn’t travel to the bedrooms as the windows are double-glazed. The on-site pool is tiny, but the spacious terrace is a real highlight. A good 30 minutes from the city center of Syntagma Square by public transport, this property is better suited for beach dwellers than city slickers. That said, it’s only a few tram stops away from the trendy district of Glyfada, where there’s a sea turtle rescue center and a plethora of cool restaurants.
Scene
Lit-up in neon blue with some trendy touches
Trendy enough in a kitschy kind of way,
Tropical Hotel is lit-up in neon blue and would look good in a Harmony Korine
movie. Cocktails are served in a
monochromatic bar with white sofas, chrome barstools, blue lighting, and golden
drapes. The breakfast area is rather dim and
could do with some more natural light and more healthy breakfast choices, but at least it's free. The lobby includes a wooden reception desk and a few
overstuffed armchairs; skylights keep the space bright. Decor in other
common areas is less attractive, with gold curtains, worn couches, and faded carpeting. The terrace is the major highlight, with a slatted veranda to keep
out the burning Greek sun, and plenty of tropical potted plants. Popular with couples and families alike, the atmosphere is relaxed and laid-back.
Location
Very close to the Alimos Marina
Tropical Hotel is located in
the suburb of Alimos, close to Kalamaki Beach, and
steps away from tram and buses to more beautiful seaside areas like Glyfada,
Voula, and Vouliagmeni -- which are reachable in 15 to 25 minutes. Athens city
center is further away; expect a 30-40 minute bus ride. Eleftherios
Venizelos Airport is about a 30-minute drive from the hotel. The surrounding area has a couple of nice restaurants, beach
bars, and coffee shops.
Rooms
Decorated in beachy shades with plain bathrooms and simple amenities
Rooms are a good size, with wooden flooring and rugs. All rooms are air-conditioned and minibars and safes, as well as flat-screen TVs. Decorated in beachy
shades of blue and yellow, rooms have pine-colored furnishings and vases of
freshly cut flowers. Some have great sea views, but the beach lies over a busy
six-lane road, which means that you have to shut your windows to get any real
sense of quiet. Beds have quality linens and
select Comfort mattresses, but some of the furnishings are a little worn. Bathrooms have hairdryers, robes, slippers, and fluffy
white towels.
Features
A tiny pool, and an expansive terrace
Tropical Hotel has few amenities; there is a tiny pool and an attractive restaurant, but the highlight here is the sun terrace. Freebies include breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi.
