Bottom Line

Situated in central Syntagma Square, the 180-room upscale NJV Athens Plaza is a landmark hotel with elegant touches and an impressive history of ministerial and diplomat guests. Though its business facilities and proximity to The Parliament draw a significant corporate presence, the hotel also has many tourist guests, mostly due to its stellar location. The 162 rooms and 18 Suites have stylish decor, premium bedding, and flat-screen TVs, plus marble bathrooms with robes. Some rooms have unfurnished balconies offering views of Syntagma Square and the Acropolis. There are an elegant restaurant, British-style bar, and relaxed cafe, but no wellness features. Conference facilities are extensive and Wi-Fi is free throughout. Compare rates with the InterContinental Athenaeum, which has a fitness center and outdoor pool.

Scene

Smart business hotel in the heart of Athens

With a landmark entrance of revolving glass doors and a carved-wood front desk with marble backdrop, the Plaza makes for a classy first impression. Vast and lofty, the lobby is as grand as its guests. High ceilings and textured marble pillars almost dwarf oversized tawny leather sofas and elegant rugs cover the parquet floors. Many of the lobby's amenities are geared towards its business guests, with digital currency displays at the front desk, international wall-mounted clocks by the elevators, and a business center in the lobby itself. Wood-paneled and exuding a gentleman's club vibe, the Explorer's Bar has forest-green tufted-leather Chesterfield chairs, sit-up stools at its small bar, and patterned carpet. The Parliament Restaurant is more prim and proper with neutral-tone furnishings and a wooden piano. Offering yet another atmosphere is the casual and pastel-themed Plaza Cafe with fun circular-framed stools and chairs. Pale greens and amethysts dominate and an eye-catching glass wall with horizontal portholes displays a wine collection.

Location

Right on Syntagma Square, by its metro, The Parliament, and shopping areas

Overlooking bustling Syntagma Square and its fountain, the NJV Athens Plaza is right in the city's heart. It's surrounded by cafes, fast food outlets, and tourist stores, plus a metro station is right by the hotel and The Parliament is two minutes away on foot. Benaki Museum and the Zoumboulaki Galleries are less than a five-minute walk away, while the historic winding streets of Plaka are 10 minutes. For high-end shopping, Ermou Street's boutiques are a 15-minute walk, and Monastiraki's flea market neighborhood is a similar distance. Both the Acropolis and Philopappos Monument can be reached in under 30 minutes on foot. Athens International Airport is a 30-minute drive or one hour by public transit.

Rooms

Spacious and classically elegant with flat-screen TVs, robes, and marble baths

Rooms and suites are spacious, well-appointed, and elegantly furnished with classic decor. Most have a soothing soft color scheme of pastels and neutral tones, with white wooden furniture, beige carpeting, and gray linens. Stylish artwork adds an attractive pop of color to many, while others have thin marble columns. Most rooms offer a Syntagma Square or Acropolis view, but they're not guaranteed for some categories. Many also have balconies, but these are unfurnished. Suites have separate living areas, larger balconies, and are on higher floors. Some also take on more masculine themes, with a somewhat underwhelming palette of soft beiges and dark-brown accents. Note that lower-category rooms may be small and lack much natural light. Also, many past guests have commented on noise issues.Comfy fittings include Elite Storm or Coco Mat mattresses, Frette linens, bathrobes and slippers, and large mirrors. All rooms also have desks, minibars, and air-conditioning, as well as flat-screen smart TVs and electronic laptop-sized safes. Bathrooms are lovely and fully marbled in either textured white or multi-tonal beige. They have shower/tub combos and Gilchrist and Soames toiletries. Twice-daily housekeeping is also provided.

Features

Multiple dining options but no wellness facilities

This upscale property offers a good amount of features for dining and business services, but there are no gym, spa, or pool for leisure. The hotel does provide discounted passes to the nearby Holmes Place health club. The main Parliament Restaurant is an elegant space with a piano and open for all three meals. Breakfast offers a buffet of both American and Greek cuisine, while lunch and dinner menus consists of a la carte Mediterranean fare. The casual Plaza Cafe is open all day, serving light bites, coffee, and cocktails, while the gentleman's club-like Explorer's Bar offers a happy hour with cocktails and snacks. Room service is available 24 hours. A masculine wood-paneled business center in the lobby has large desks, office chairs, computers, and printing facilities. Wi-Fi is free in all public areas and for all room categories except for Classic-level. Guests have also complained of spotty Wi-Fi service.
