The 38-room Hera Hotel is an upper-mid-range boutique hotel located on the edge of the Plaka neighborhood in Athens. The main draw here is Peacock, the rooftop restaurant offering great views of the Acropolis. Breakfast (if you purchase a particular package) and Wi-Fi are free, though breakfast is served inside the hotel without any views. The rooms are on the smaller side (though some have furnished balconies with Acropolis views) and the clientele is generally older. It may be worth checking rates at AVA Hotel, a nearby boutique hotel with large suites featuring full kitchens.
Scene
Charming boutique with Acropolis views
The four story Hera Hotel has a white facade with cute balconies and a stained glass peacock posted near the front entrance. Inside, the lobby consists of dark wood-paneled walls and white marble floors. A brown leather sofa looks stylishly worn next to the reception desk. Corridors are a bit narrow and past guests have complained about the elevator. The breakfast room has atrium seating. Upstairs, the cozy Peacock restaurant consists of wooden floors (that show some wear and tear) and wrap-around windows with views of Athens and the Acropolis.
Location
On the southern edge of Plaka
Hera Hotel has a convenient location for those who want to walk to Plaka's numerous souvenir shops, art galleries, and restaurants -- plus see Athens' famous historical sights like Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis. The street right outside the hotel is busy and there's a beauty salon and women's clothing boutique next door. Parking is included with the price of a room, which is a nice perk.
Rooms
Pretty but small -- some have balcony views of the Acropolis
There are 38 rooms on three floors of Hera Hotel, and each is decorated with calm, neutral tones and pretty details like tufted headboards and gold framed mirrors. Size is an issue, even in the larger suites, but its partially due to beds that are larger than usual (guests note they are particularly comfortable). The most expensive rooms have furnished verandas with views of The Acropolis while the cheaper options face the street. Bathrooms feature full bathtubs and single sinks. Electronic safes, minibars, and flat-screen TVs come standard. Double glazed windows do a nice job of blocking street noise.
Features
Parking, Wi-Fi, and breakfast
Free perks include one parking spot and Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, along with a decent breakfast (if you purchase a particular package) served in a pretty atrium-style dining room. Peacock restaurant on the roof serves lunch, dinner, and cocktails with views of the Acropolis. There are computers available for guests to use in the lobby as well as a lobby bar for cocktails and coffee throughout the day. For a younger vibe and cooler scene at the rooftop pool, check out Fresh Hotel -- though you'll be giving up Hera Hotel's prime location.
