Bottom Line

The most iconic hotel in Aspen, the
luxurious St. Regis is also centrally located, situated within walking distance
of Aspen Mountain’s main gondola and smack in the middle of the historic city
itself. Home to one of the world’s top-rated spas and a range of exquisite amenities,
the St. Regis also makes sure that its fine features extend to every room. Each
is equipped with a separate soaking tub and Italian espresso machine, and some have mountain views. For those
who can afford it, the St. Regis checks all the boxes expected of a high-end
mountain town stay, but be forewarned that restaurants are pricey and Wi-Fi costs extra.

Scene

Red brick manor exterior and mountain chic interior

Situated in a regal, five-story red-brick building, the St. Regis looks like a fine European manor both inside
and out. The lobby, also known as Shadow Mountain Lodge, features a huge stone
fireplace as its centerpiece. The common area is comprised of wood-paneled walls, huge
arched windows, and several seating areas with long couches and high quality
leather armchairs. Skilled musicians sit down regularly at a majestic grand
piano for evening background music. Throughout the hotel, large black and
white landscape photos fill the walls. A wide wooden staircase overhung by a
beautiful modern chandelier leads to the spacious outdoor courtyard where an
enormous Christmas tree stands in winter and children play in the summer,
the slopes of Aspen Mountain looming nearby. The Astor Library is a comfortable place to
have a quiet drink. The heated outdoor pool and hot tub are frequented by skiers in the winter and hikers in the summer. The Italian
restaurant, though clearly a fine-dining establishment, features woven place
mats rather than white tablecloths, stylish raindrop-shaped lights, and a
textured silver wall that resembles hundreds of bubbles. The lobby bar is
marked by a wraparound black leather-outfitted lounge, snowflake prints, and attractive
electric candles mounted on walls. The Remede Spa’s most striking features
are its waterfall pool and line of beds in front of a fireplace, each equipped
with an oxygen tank and reading lamp.

Location

Easy access to town and mountains

The St. Regis is tucked up against Aspen
Mountain, the ski area’s slopes leading right down to the hotel’s courtyard.
The gondola is two blocks away, a few minutes’ walk from the hotel, and the
heart of the town -- including the bus station with free transportation to the areas of Buttermilk, Snowmass, Aspen Highlands, Basalt, and Carbondale -- is a block
away, less than a five-minute walk from the front door. All of Aspen’s
restaurants, shops, and bars, as well as a small movie theater and opera house,
can be reached by foot in less than 15 minutes. The Aspen-Pitkin County Airport
is a 10-minute drive northwest; Glenwood Hot Springs is about an hour’s drive in the same direction. Aspen Mountain is directly behind the hotel, accessible by foot in
less than five minutes, and other nearby trails lay five to 30 minutes away by car.

Rooms

Beautiful decor with spectacular bathrooms, plush beds, and espresso machines

No
matter which room guests choose from -- Classic, Superior, and Suite categories -- furnishings are made of high-quality
materials, from plush, pillow-top mattresses to leather armchairs to shiny
wooden desks and silver-framed, flat-screen TVs. Guest units have rustic-elegant
hardwood floors, beige and gray walls, and attractive, earth-colored area rugs.
Wooden headboards feature small reading lights and wall decorations include
interesting black-and-white portraits of dogs. All units are also equipped with
mini-fridges, ironing facilities, and Italian-style espresso machines. Bathrooms
are strikingly spacious and luxurious, with sleek gray marble walls, varied light fixtures, dual sinks, big glass showers, and separate
soaking tubs. Bathrobes and slippers are included as well. Suites are at least double
the size of other units. They include separate living rooms, and several have their own
gas fireplaces. Some have mountain views. Note that rooms located in the Annex building are difficult to access.

Features

Butler service, Champagne toasts, and heated outdoor pool

The St.
Regis offers a free shuttle and unlimited access to the heated outdoor pool, hot
tub, and fitness center. Wi-Fi access, however, requires a fee. Valet parking
is available for an extra charge as well. Remede spa offers a gamut of facials, massages, and body
treatments with many built-in bonuses. Perks include a hot tub with waterfalls,
a steam cave, and beds with their own oxygen machines. The hotel offers a butler
service specializing in customized care for guests, ranging from unpacking and
packing luggage to shoeshines to delivering breakfast every morning. The
award-winning on-site Italian restaurant is popular among non-guests and serves
breakfast (which isn’t included in rates), lunch, and dinner. A full menu is available for room service and the Chefs Club restaurant hosts
up-and-coming chefs and their creative cuisine. The hotel also has a beautiful
ballroom, business center, and meeting rooms available for events. On-site activities for children include live music, gingerbread house-making,
and family hikes.
