Scene

Modern cabins in gate-guarded forest with gardens and trout pond

Within a gated community, Willow Winds is a beautifully landscaped outdoor playground. Upon entering, guests come across the large trout pond with a fountain centerpiece, and take in the surrounding greenery and flower-filled gardens. Not as rustic as many cabin retreats, the grounds are equipped with statues, several play areas for children, a separate game cabin with air hockey and foosball tables, a hot tub, and wooden lawn chairs. Guests are mainly families with kids or couples on a romantic getaway, including outdoorsy types who explore the property trail that connects with Mountain-to-Sea hiking trail.

Location

In the woods near Biltmore Estate, a short drive from downtown

Willow Winds is located on 40 pristine acres of land in a gated area of Southern Asheville just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Outdoor sights, such as Mount Mitchell State Park, Pearson's Falls, and Sliding Rock at Looking Glass Falls can be reached by car (to the trailheads) in about 40 minutes to one hour. The famous Biltmore Estate and its many shops and restaurants are a five- to 10-minute drive away, and downtown Asheville is about 10 to 15 minutes by car.

Rooms

More like modern cottages, with hot tubs, decks, and fireplaces

There are 25 cabins to choose from, ranging from one- to three-bedroom units. While quaint and wood-built from the outside, they feel more modern inside, with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. All are completely insulated with dry wall, have glass doors and windows, and offer lovely wooden decks with tables, chairs, barbecue grills, and private hot tubs -- the atmosphere isn’t exactly rustic, but plain decor, simple kitchens, and tight bathrooms keep them from being upscale. Each cabin is brightly painted and uniquely decorated with leather couches, comfortable four-post beds, wood-burning fireplaces, and fully stocked kitchens. Many cabins also have washers and dryers. Sandy's Chalet is the property's only classic mountain chalet-style cabin, with floor-to-ceiling windows, a covered deck, and a lighted fountain.

Features

A nature lover's playpen, with gift baskets

The place is family-friendly, offering a covered Game Porch for kids with air hockey tables and foosball, two wooden playgrounds with slides and swings, and a library with 2,000 DVDs to rent. There's also a small fitness room, and free Wi-Fi and parking. Guests receive a gift basket containing local specialties and snacks, and there is a hammock outside of every cabin for relaxing with a book or for an afternoon nap.
