Hotels and drugs have often gone hand in hand over the years. Whether it's a drug-crazed freakout à la Charlie Sheen, a tragic celebrity overdose, or a massive drug bust, plenty of drug-related events have taken place under the roofs of some of the country's finest hotels. In light of the NYPD's $5 million coke bust at The Crowne Plaza Times Square announced yesterday, we decided to round up the most shocking hotel drug scandals of all time.
Many drug dealers fly under the radar by staying in sketchy motor inns, but some prefer to splurge for something nicer (after all, dealing can be quite the lucrative "profession" so we hear). The upper-middle-range Crowne Plaza is a premier pick in Times Square -- and yesterday, the NYPD announced that it was recently the site of a $5 million coke bust. The traffickers attempted to pass as tourists, wheeling the 100-plus pounds of cocaine out of the hotel in rolling suitcases before getting arrested.
No one is going to forget Prince Harry's naked antics in Vegas anytime soon, and the scandal intensified when it came out that cocaine had been present in the hotel suite and that many of the party guests arrived high on marijuana or shrooms.
Whitney Houston's tragic death at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in February caused a media flurry, particularly when it evolved that snorting cocaine out of a spoon had contributed to her accidental drowning in the tub.
Charlie Sheen has been the source of plenty of scandalous incidents over the years, but one of the most memorable was surely his coked out trashing of a hotel room at The Plaza, which led to the authorities being called. (Ironically, he was staying in the Eloise Suite, named for a popular children's book character, which is geared toward families and is decorated in girlish fashion by Betsy Johnson. Maybe he got sick of the pink striped wallpaper.)
The Chateau Marmont is Hollywood's most notorious celebrity hideaway and has seen a lot of drugs pass through over the decades. John Belushi's fatal overdose in Bungalow #3 is the most tragic example.
Hard Rock Las Vegas has had several run-ins with the authorities over drugs on the premises -- first, when employees were accused of selling drugs and providing restrooms to guests for illicit activities (the hotel settled), and second, when eight people were arrested for drug use at the hotel's Rehab pool party.
Michael Douglas' son, Cameron, must not have found his occasional acting and DJ gigs lucrative enough for his tastes, because he turned to dealing meth to make some extra cash. After being fingered as the middleman in a deal, he was arrested at the Gansevoort in a room rented by his famous dad.
