Throughout our travels we’ve seen over-the-top luxurious rooms, themed rooms, massive rooms, just plain weird rooms, and everything in between. But for some rooms that we’ve gotten the chance to explore, there’s no better way to describe them than just, well, cool. Whether they’re located in caves or decked out in all-over orange (you’ll understand in a minute), these ten picks are some of the coolest hotel rooms in the world.
Hotel Estherea takes a maximalist approach to its interior design, and treads the fine line between plush extravagance and gaudiness with aplomb. This is particularly apparent in the lavish Suite of Orange, which lives up to its name; decked out in various shades of orange with plenty of mahogany touches, it features a gorgeous chandelier and high-tech amenities such as massive flat-screen TVs and iPads upon request. The hotel’s location on the Singel canal is picturesque, and well positioned for exploring Amsterdam's attractions.
Reachable only by boat or seaplane, Little Palm Island Resort & Spa is located on a private island where wild key deer roam. A favorite getaway for celebrities, it provides a secluded place to unplug from the world in a lush, tropical environment. The resort features just 30 luxurious suites, with the Escape Suite being one of the coolest; a standalone beachfront villa, it features a private balcony, an outdoor terrace, and one of the sexiest beds we’ve seen.
Located on the Left Bank and just a hop, skip, and a jump to Luxembourg Gardens, this boutique hotel is not a place for conformists -- even the exterior facade is painted in a tree design, making it stand out among its more traditional neighbors. Hotel Apostrophe has 16 artsy rooms that feature distinct themes. We love the Paris Paradis Room that brings the streets of Paris inside with pretty murals and quaint Parisian touches. All rooms are modern, with iPod docks, CD/DVD players, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi.
The Lakedale Resort is not your grandfather's campground. In addition to a lakefront location with picnic spots, this 82-acre property offers everything from canvas cabins to an Airstream Trailer, which is pretty cool. The fully restored 1978 Excella sits right beside the lake, and includes a sleeping area with a TV and DVD player and a kitchenette. Guests staying in the trailer can enjoy free breakfast every morning with options such as pancakes, fruit, and coffee.
Rosewood Mayakoba is a gorgeous, peaceful retreat within the resort community of Playa Del Carmen, set on a mile-long stretch of beach. The 128 suites feature attractive contemporary decor -- picture clean lines, white walls, and rich woods -- as well as high-tech amenities and private outdoor plunge pools. All offer plenty of luxe features, but only the Deluxe Overwater Suites have swim-up access. Extra overwater suite perks include butler service, boat docks, free tequila, bottled water, and fresh fruit, and sexy open bathrooms with deep soaking tubs and private outdoor patios.
This three-tower, off-the-Strip hotel is known for its crazy parties and celebrity stopovers. It features over 400 sleek rooms with up-to-date technologies, but the coolest – or at least the naughtiest – is the Erotic Suite. Kinky couple-friendly amenities include everything from a “show shower” with a stripper pole and nightclub-esque lighting, to a rotating bed underneath a mirrored ceiling. There’s also plenty of erotic artwork to spare.
Hotel Silken Puerta America is known for its over-the-top design, from the colorful facade of the hotel to the rooms. Each of the 12 floors was executed by a different designer, and range from space-like decor to sexy style with levitating beds and bold colors. We love the futuristic Junior Suite; like other rooms on the same floor, it features a stark white design (accented by a bright blue wall), as well as a levitating bed and an ultra-modern bathroom with see-through walls.
Twenty miles north of Santa Barbara, situated on 300 acres of canyon wilderness, El Capitan Canyon offers a camping, or "glamping," experience with enough modern conveniences to satisfy travelers who would rather just semi-rough it. Guests stay in cabins, tents, or yurts, which are particularly cool. These large canvas structures are the newest additions to the resort, and feature plenty of “windows” for natural light as well as a skylight for stargazing.
9. Sol 2 at Playa Escondida, Riviera Nayarit
This secluded, romantic retreat is tucked away in a beachfront spot in the jungle outside Sayulita. It offers 25 beautiful rooms housed in standalone huts built using natural local materials and offering ocean or jungle views, rustic-chic decor, terraces, and no window panes. The idea is to deliver an unplugged, in-touch-with-nature vacation, so rooms have no TVs, while cell phone and Internet service are limited to some common areas. Sol 2 overlooks the ocean and has a cavernous vibe with stone walls, ceilings, and floors.
Housed in a unique building in the heart of artsy Chelsea -- near the clubs and designer flagships of the Meatpacking District -- the 120-room, nautical-themed Maritime boutique hotel offers luxury-level comfort at a very reasonable price. Rooms are in keeping with the theme, and the Junior Penthouse features city views from its porthole-style windows. It also has a decidedly boat-like vibe with wood-paneled walls…and a small bathroom.
