Procida Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Plan Your Island Vacation

Like its sister islands of Capri and Ischia, Procida is accessible via ferry from Naples and hydrofoils and ferries from Capri, Ischia, and towns along the Amalfi Coast. The high-speed ferry departing from Sorrento is the quickest route to the island, taking only about twenty minutes.

Like Capri, tourists are forbidden from bringing their vehicles onto the island during the high season between April and October. Given the small size of the island, the difficult-to-navigate roads, and the general hassle of bringing a car along a ferry route, we recommend skipping the car and using one of the transportation options below.

Call a Taxi or Micro-Taxi

Procida offers standard taxis and "mico-taxis," similar to the Calessini found on Ischia. These three-wheeled vehicles are ideal for navigating the island's narrow streets.

Take the Bus

There are four bus routes on the island, departing approximately every half hour. These routes connect every major point on the island—including the ports where ferries dock—and tickets cost between €1.20-€1.40 ($1.29-$1.51).

Renting a Scooter or Bike

Experienced riders can rent a scooter or bike to easily navigate the island. Traffic on Procida's streets can quickly become congested with just a few cars, so exercise caution when operating any vehicle. Like the rest of Italy, hopeful scooter drivers will need a valid license from their home country and an International Driver’s Permit.

Despite its small size, there is plenty to explore on Procida, from vibrant fishing villages to medieval fortresses rich with island history.

Explore the Village of Terra Murata

Towering over the island's highest points is Terra Murata, a fortified medieval village made up of narrow passageways, homes tucked away behind steep walls, and a central castle—Palazzo d’Avalos—presiding over it all. The trek to the top is steep but worth the climb, rewarding dedicated travelers with sweeping views of the island surrounded by fascinating ruins.

Join a Walking Tour

The benefit of Procida's small size is that travelers can explore much of the island on foot. A walking tour of the Old Town will give travelers a crash course on the island's vibrant history while also giving them a guided opportunity to see the sights.

When visiting an island, a boat tour is a no-brainer. With its small size and iconic coastline, touring Procida via the water is a great way to get an overview of the island. Marina Corricella is a famous fishing village on the coast of Procida. It is known for its iconic colors, uniquely shaped buildings, bustling port, and romantic vistas. The only way to reach the village is by boat or several winding stairways. However, there are several spots along upper roads where travelers can look out on the Corricella coastline and snap a photo.

Like the rest of the Amalfi region, the humble lemon dominates the culinary scene on the island. However, the Procida Lemon has a unique claim to fame. Procida lemons are much larger and more aromatic than your typical variety, with a much thicker albedo, aka the white pith below the yellow peel. These fruits were selectively cultivated throughout generations to arrive at the sour-sweet tangy delicacy that exists today.

A trip to Procida would be incomplete without trying the recipes that highlight this local staple. Try out an insalata di limone or lemon salad for lunch. This aptly named dish is exactly as it sounds: a plate or bowl of diced fresh Procida lemon and some light dressing, embracing and even highlighting the natural bitterness of the lemon. However, when it comes to the many citrus delights on offer in Procida, I prefer the tart sweetness of the Lingue di Procida above all else. A perfect option for less intrepid lemon enthusiasts, Lingue di Procida is a light pastry similar to a filled croissant, with flaky pastry wrapped around a lemon cream filling.

Like the other two islands, Procida has fresh seafood as a mealtime staple. Fishing is woven into the island's fabric, as it was historically populated chiefly by fishermen and their families. The day's fresh catch comes in the early morning, supplying local restaurants.

This tiny island offers fewer accommodation options than Ischia or even Capri. However, what Procida lacks in hotel variety, it makes up for in character, intimacy, charm, and location.
