We're celebrating all kinds of culinary holidays at the Oyster offices this week, and of course we can't turn down an excuse to chow down on a hot dog -- loaded with the works, please. So in honor of today being National Hot Dog Day, we've rounded up a few of our favorite spots across the states to feast on this American staple. Sorry, baseball game not included.
Established in 1928, The Varsity has since opened numerous outposts around Atlanta to accommodate the continuously growing demand for its delicious hot dogs. An array of condiments are available, but it seems the locals like to top their dogs with some cool coleslaw. The downtown location in particular is always lively, and the W Atlanta puts you within easy reach.
Gray's Papaya is a movie star and New York staple, having appeared in films such as You've Got Mail and Fools Rush In and TV shows like Sex and the City and How I Met Your Mother. Founded over forty years ago, the "famous hot doggery" has received numerous awards for its tasty -- and inexpensive -- hot dogs. Hotel Beacon sits just a few blocks away from the Upper West Side location, and offers a solid value with huge rooms equipped with kitchenettes.
We promise that their level of disgustingness to look at is equal to their level of deliciousness to eat! Ben's Chili Bowl has served everyone from Bono to Obama, and one of the most popular vehicles for its world-famous chili is a simple, tasty hot dog. But almost no one can turn down the chili fries, either. Hotel Helix is about a 15-minute walk away, which should help burn (just a few) of the hundreds and hundreds of calories you'll ingest. Thankfully, it also has a small gym.
San Francisco's Union Square is home to tons of food carts and stands serving tasty treats, and Annie's is one of the most popular. Grab a dog, some chips, a soda, and a seat on the steps of the square; it's a prime spot for people-watching. With all the money saved on your cheap eats, you can stay at the nearby Sir Francis Drake, which may be upscale but also packs a solid value; rooms are large and modern, and freebies include bike rentals and in-room yoga mats.
