Bottom Line

The 549-room Valentin Sancti Petri Hotel Chiclana is an upper-middle-range oceanfront resort offering direct access to one of the best beaches in southern Spain. Clean, sunny rooms have balconies (some with sea views), free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, but decor is dated and bland. The three outdoor pools are pleasant and are surrounded by plenty of loungers, and the smaller indoor pool is a great perk in the colder months. On-site dining options are good and varied, and include two buffets and three a la carte restaurants, one of which serves a solid tapas menu. The entertainment program keeps guests of all ages busy during the summer, and the spa offers an array of treatments for those looking to get pampered. Couples seeking some peace and quiet may prefer the adult-only TUI Sensimar Playa La Barrosa, located right next door.

Scene

Large beachfront resort with spacious gardens and a seasonal entertainment program

Offering direct access to beautiful La Barrosa Beach, Valentin Sancti Petri Chiclana is a good pick for those who want sun, beach, and a mix of relaxation and fun. The entertainment team keeps the atmosphere lively around the main pool in the summer, but those wanting some peace and quiet can easily find more serene spots on-site. The property’s excellent kids’ club, beachfront location, and seasonal entertainment program draw mostly families and couples, but its extensive meeting space make it a solid option for business travelers as well. Adorned with a cute wooden ceiling, a large chandelier, brown suede couches, glossy metal finishes, and checkered floors, the lobby is the most contemporary of all common spaces. The rest of the public areas have a more classic and somewhat generic feel, with dated flowery or muted upholstery, and simple tile floors. Still, most guests are here to enjoy the pretty outdoors, which include huge oceanfront gardens and three pools.

Location

On La Barrosa Beach, within walking distance of restaurants and a few shops

The hotel is located right on La Barrosa Beach, one of the nicest, longest stretches of sand in the region. Around it, upscale hotels and private residences line the quiet streets, and there are a few restaurants, bars, and shops within an easy walk of the hotel. One of the area's excellent golf clubs, Novo Sancti Petri Golf, can be found about an 18-minute walk (two-minute drive) from the hotel. Street parking may be hard to come by in the peak season, but noise and crowds are generally not an issue. Chiclana de la Frontera, located a 15-minute drive away, features several historic sights and a couple of great markets, all worth a visit. The historic center of Cadiz can be reached in about 40 minutes. Jerez International Airport is a 50-minute drive away.

Rooms

Sunny rooms with classic decor, free Wi-Fi, and furnished balconies

The hotel has 549 rooms, all featuring furnished balconies with either garden or sea views. Rooms are spacious and clean, but the traditional decor style is dated, especially the thin yellow bedspreads, generic green chairs, and beige tiled floors. Decent amenities include air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with international channels, but safes are only available at the front desk for a fee, and mini-fridges come empty instead of stocked. Superior Rooms (also known as Junior Suites) feature an additional double sofa bed, and Family Rooms are two connecting Standard Rooms. Bathrooms are spotless, albeit a little bit basic for the price, with plastic shower curtains and older sinks and taps. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided in all rooms.

Features

Four pools, spa, fitness center, seasonal entertainment, varied dining options, and meeting space

A range of excellent leisure and dining facilities are offered at the Valentin Sancti Petri Hotel Chiclana. The hotel has four pools, three of them outdoors, and a seasonal heated one indoors. The two main pools are large and clean, and each features a whirlpool and plenty of loungers and shaded areas. The kiddy pool is located in a separate section in the gardens, and the indoor pool -- complete with swan necks and a jetted area -- is inside the spa, which also features a separate hydrotherapy area, a sauna, steam room, and massage and salon services. There is also a small fitness center with a handful of machines and free weights, and a volleyball court in the gardens. The kids’ club offers various daily activities, and the entertainment team keeps adults busy during the day. There are four restaurants on-site: two buffets, two seasonal restaurants by the pool, and a tapas bar. The beach club was renovated in 2017 and serves light meals and a long list of drinks. The hotel also features over 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space; the largest room can hold up to 1,200 guests.
