Bottom Line

The 414-room Marconfort Griego Hotel is neither pretty nor classy, but it is located right in the center of the Torremolinos, and a short walk from an array of stunning beaches. Its main restaurant and pool are unremarkable, rooms are no-frills, and guests complain of overcrowding and noise. But if you’re looking for a cheap beach stay, the Marconfort Griego is an adequate option.

Scene

A tourist trap in need of a makeover

The Marconfort Griego Hotel’s exterior is functional and boxy, and its interiors have seen better days (and yet, the furnishings were certainly never lovely.) The restaurant resembles a college cafeteria, complete with Formica tables. Though the hotel could use a complete revamp, it is clean and well-kept, especially considering the crowds of Spanish families, groups, and couples, who line up for the poolside lounge chairs as early as 8 a.m. (so much for that late vacation night out). If you visit during a slow time, the small rectangular pool is an appealing place to lounge. Those not staying on a higher floor should take the wide staircases; the elevators are frustratingly slow.

Location

The hotel is right in the heart of lively Torremolinos, not too far from the beach.

If your ideal in vacation takes place smack in the center of a buzzing tourist-town, you’re in luck. The Marconfort Griego is on a busy main road, surrounded by bars, restaurants, and shops of all kinds. It’s a convenient stroll to all the sights, and if the 10-minute walk to Bajondillo Beach is too far, a bus will bring guests to and from the beach starting in the morning.

Rooms

No-frills rooms are clean but in serious need of a makeover.

The rooms are clean and well-kept, yet dated and basic. The beds are uncomfortable, and the furniture is tired, stiff, and dorm-like. Picture: comforters with geometric patterns, and cheap, blonde, IKEA-style wood furnishings. Rooms were updated in 2015 to include wood flooring, flat-screen TVs, and new AC units. Ask for a room overlooking the mountains; the poolside rooms are noisy day and night, although also flooded with sunlight. The tiny TVs are of the old tube variety. Clean sheets and towels are abundant. You’ll need luck with the Wi-Fi — service is spotty at best.

Features

The pool is pleasant yet basic; the Wi-Fi is spotty at best.

A utilitarian rectangular outdoor pool only receives sunlight until early afternoon, and a terrace for sunbathing is situated on the eighth floor for those who want to continue working on their tans. There’s a bare-bones fitness room and a game room for kids. The hotel restaurant serves unexceptional, and often repetitive, food. There's also a casual themed restaurant open for dinner. Seats are in short supply around the hot, busy hotel bar, where tourists crowd for flamenco and karaoke. Don't count on free Wi-Fi to actually work.
