Bottom Line

The 180-room ILUNION Fuengirola (formerly Confortel) is a mid-range hotel with a great beachfront location on the promenade and near plenty of bars and restaurants. Contemporary rooms are well-sized and equipped with the basics, including mini-fridges, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs, though safes require a fee. Some rooms have furnished terraces overlooking the sea. The ocean-view pool is small, has limited loungers, and can be quite shaded. On-site features include an all-day restaurant and lobby bar with outdoor terrace, a kids' club, and spa, but no gym. The similarly priced THB Reserva del Higueron offers more modern rooms and several more leisure facilities.

Scene

Beachfront hotel with mostly contemporary furnishings

The ILUNION (formerly Confortel) is a three-pearl property with its greatest asset being its location along the promenade. Interiors are mostly contemporary, featuring lots of earth tones in the wooden furniture, tile floors, and white walls. Some aspects, such as the striped ottomans and bright-red armchairs in the lobby, could use an update though. Lots of windows throughout gives the hotel a bright, cheerful atmosphere. There are no grounds to speak of, but a big plus are the sea views from many public spaces, as well as some rooms. While there are a pool and kids' club, the hotel mostly draws couples.

Location

Beachfront location on the promenade, near bars and restaurants

The primary drawcard for guests is the ILUNION's central location, just a few minutes' walk to Los Boliches beach. Los Boliches Train Station is also a quick two-minute walk away. This is a popular area for tourists, which in turn means that there is plenty to do in the area. Within walking distance are Sould Park (16 minutes), Plaza Constitucion (25 minutes), and a wealth of restaurants and bar. Other notables nearby are Bioparc Fuengirola (10-minute drive), the Fuengirola Street Market (10-minute drive), and Costa Water Park (12 minutes by car). Underground parking is available for a daily fee.

Rooms

Comfortably sized rooms, some with furnished terraces

Rooms at ILUNION Hotel are comfortably sized and outfitted in contemporary furnishings. All 180 rooms are decorated similarly, with beige stone flooring, white sheets, and neutral-tone walls. Pops of color come from the peach-colored couch cushions, the sunset-orange hue in back of the bedside lamps, and the fruit-inspired artwork along the walls. Many rooms have furnished balconies overlooking the sea. Standard amenities include desks, small flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Safes are provided but they require a fee.Modern, neutral-tone bathrooms are equipped with shower/tub combos, bidets, hairdryers, and bath products. Higher-category rooms add bathrobes, slippers, and more bath products. Some rooms are showing a bit of wear and tear.

Features

Beach access, a terrace pool, and restaurant

A primary feature is the second-floor outdoor pool with a pretty checkerboard pattern and well-maintained terra-cotta deck. It has lovely views of the water, but there are a limited amount of loungers and past guests have complained that it's shady a large part of the day. Guests can also head down to the sandy beach, where sunbeds are also available, though at a cost. An on-site spa offers a variety of treatments, but there's no gym. A kids' club is available, as are meeting and event spaces. Wi-Fi is free throughout. The on-site restaurant is open all day and receives mostly positive reviews, plus there's a bar with indoor and outdoor seating.
