Bottom Line
The Hotel Balcon de Europa is one of many four-pearl luxury hotel choices on the Málaga coast, but what sets this 108-room property apart is its prime location on the beach in the center of tourist-friendly Nerja. There's definitely an adult vibe here thanks to the rooftop swimming pool, spa facilities, and a romantic restaurant with views of the beach through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Scene
Quaint and intimate from the front -- sprawling and grand from the back
Built on the Mediterranean Sea, the Hotel Balcon de Europa makes excellent use of its prime oceanfront location with beautiful views of the beach from the rooftop pool and El Nautico restaurant. Approaching from the street, the property looks smaller and less upscale than it actually is. The design in the public spaces is classic, with brown leather armchairs and sofas (looking slightly worn) and a golden railed staircase. The rooftop terrace has green sunbeds and overlooks the swimming pool and beach.
Location
On the beach in the town of Nerja
The Hotel Balcon de Europa is built on a rockface directly on the Mediterranean Sea, offering guests fast access to the sandy beach. The prime location is just a few steps away from the main shopping area and city square of Nerja, which teems with tapas restaurants and shops. The Malaga airport is about a 45-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Updated and clean; some rooms have ocean views
Rooms at the Hotel Balcon de Europa continue the classic and contemporary aesthetic of the hotel's public areas, with ocean views in the higher-priced rooms. Earth colors and neutral tile floors are jazzed up with bright bed decor and draperies, such as the pops of magenta in the Double Rooms. Some rooms have terraces just large enough for a table and chairs but with incredible views of the water. Other rooms overlook an unattractive interior courtyard and neighboring rooftops. Flat-screen TVs have satellite channels and there's free Wi-Fi in each room, as well as in the public areas. There's also plenty of closet space.
Features
Beautiful rooftop terrace with a small swimming pool
Though there's plenty to see and do right out the front doors of Hotel Balcon de Europa, there's a lot going on inside too. The rooftop terrace and pool overlook the beach. The pool is small, and there isn't a lot of space for sunbeds. A large whirlpool might be the better option for getting wet. Restaurant Don Enrique serves a buffet breakfast (price varies depending on which room package is booked), and there's waiter service for dinner, but El Nautico is the real standout, with floor-to-ceiling views of the ocean and fresh seafood. An on-site spa offers massages while the coffee bar and piano bar mean guests won't have to roam to find a cappuccino or a cocktail.

Costa del Sol? More like Costa del Awesome
So Spain’s Costa del Sol is pretty renowned (and justly so), but it doesn’t get quite as much international love as the French Riviera or Amalfi Coast. We’re not quite sure why, because it’s pretty friggin’ gorgeous, and hotels here are a fraction of the price of those in more famous Mediterranean beach destinations. If…
