The four-pearl Gran Hotel Elba Estepona & Thalasso Spa is located along the coast, about a 22-minute drive from the heart of Estepona. The 204 rooms and suites have a classic elegance and are spacious, plus come equipped with free Wi-Fi, minibars, separate bathtubs and showers, and furnished balconies or terraces -- some with lovely sea vistas. The hotel draws equal numbers of families and couples with its three pools, kids' club, expansive spa, and well-equipped gym. A range of dining options includes one buffet and three a la carte eateries, and there are all-inclusive packages. Note that some amenities are only offered in high season. The large presence of kids means the property has a bustling, often loud atmosphere, so couples may prefer the adult-only Senator Banus Spa Hotel.
Scene
Upscale Mediterranean-style property
Though the Gran Hotel Elba Estepona & Thalasso Spa doesn't live up to its advertised five-star rating, it's an upscale property with amenities that appeal to both couples and families. Its waterfront location and palm-tree-laden grounds give the hotel an effortless beachy vibe, enhanced by the terra-cotta-colored buildings and well-manicured landscaping. Open-air hallways with intricate wood ceilings and gothic-style chandeliers add character and compliment the Mediterranean aesthetic. Inside, the hotel is elegant, but a bit tired in places. The lobby's plush purple couches, wrought-iron detailing, and meditation statues are attractive, but some spaces have rust-colored couches and patterned upholstery that could use a refresh. However, those minor quibbles are easily overlooked when looking out at the beautiful sea from multiple vantage points.
Location
Somewhat remote but beautiful waterfront location in Estepona
The hotel is located along the coast, about a 22-minute drive from the main area of Estepona, where there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops. With very little to do within walking distance of the hotel, guests will find that a rental car, taxi, or bus will be there best bet to seeing what this area has to offer. The drive to Malaga Airport is about 50 minutes. For those who do choose to rent a car, it helps to know that there is a gas station located just a two-minute drive from the hotel.
Rooms
Spacious, elegant, and well-appointed rooms
The 204 rooms and suites vary slightly in aesthetic and size, but all are classically elegant and spacious. The design consists of mostly soft color schemes, detailed wood furniture that adds character, beige tile or hardwood floors, patterned linens, and large floral artwork. Rooms are spacious across the board and sliding glass doors leading to furnished balconies or terraces let in natural light. Some rooms have gorgeous sea views. Furnishings include small sitting areas with tables, work desks, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and tea- and coffee-making facilities. Some have upscale touches such as Nespresso machines and welcome gifts. Bathrooms are lovely, outfitted with small showers and separate bathtubs, bathrobes and slippers, a range of bath products, scales, hairdryers, and bidets.
Features
Kid-friendly amenities, four restaurants, and a large spa
On-site features abound for kids and adults alike, but some change with the season. The kids' club is only available during high season (summer months), and the heated solarium pool is only adult-only during the same period. While direct beach access is arguably the crowning feature, the main outdoor pool is a close second. The terra-cotta deck is lined with loungers and umbrellas, and gorgeous sea views. A separate kiddy pool is also available. Live entertainment is offered and previous guests have, for the most part, said that it's enjoyable. Thalasso Spa offers a wide range of treatments for a fee, and a fitness center is well-equipped with various cardio machines, training circuits, and free weights. A business center with internet access, computers, and a printer is available, which may come in handy since the free Wi-Fi is reportedly unreliable. There are four restaurants on-site, including the main buffet and three a la carte eateries -- one Asian, French-Italian, and Mediterranean. Some are closed during low season. All-inclusive packages are available and room service is 24 hours.
