Bottom Line

The Bajondillo Apartments, a 650-unit mid-range aparthotel complex on Torremolinos' famed Paseo Maritimo and beautiful Mediterranean beach, has the added bonus of being just a few blocks from central Torremolinos with all its shops, restaurants, and bars. Peaceful, with a large central pool, the Bajondillo is no-frills, and its rooms are worn and haphazard in their decor. Kitchenettes are so small that cooking could pose a challenge, but as a base for an outdoor beach-centric holiday, the Bajondillo works.

Scene

Beautiful gardens, lawns, and pool, but interiors need updating

The grounds and gardens of the Bajondillo Apartments are lush, extravagant, and peaceful, with room to wander, or to stake out a sunbed for an afternoon of vitamin D replenishment. The indoor spaces, while clean and roomy, are stuck in an earlier decade, with a hodgepodge of decor and design styles that seems more accidental than deliberate. The complex feels more like a large, beachside apartment block than a resort, although there are plenty of options for drinks, snacks, dinner, and entertainment. La Braseria, the beachfront restaurant, serves dinner only. The terrace feels a bit like a 19th-century throwback, with tall, white, wrought-iron lamp posts and an unrivaled sea view. Inside, the restaurant is dark, with copper mobiles, nice wood accents, and stucco -- a much heavier feel. The Lobby Snack Bar is furnished with rather tired-looking upholstered sofas in bamboo frames, with wrought-iron accents, and an odd mix of bright greens, blues, red leather chairs, and plaid armchairs. Still, the vibe is social and not uptight, and the hotel is clean and welcoming in a relaxed way.

Location

Fantastic location on the boardwalk and beach, but near the center of town

The Bajondillo Apartments could not be better located for a Spanish beach holiday, right on the Paseo Maritimo, the boardwalk that stretches all the way along the Torremolinos coastline with the beach on one side and hotels, restaurants, bars, and shops on the other. Downtown Torremolinos is a few short blocks away, and there is plenty to do, see, and eat nearby. Malaga Airport is a 10-minute drive, and the hotel offers free transfers both ways if previously arranged.

Rooms

Roomy, with great views but in need of updating

Apartments at the Bajondillo are roomy, with large balconies, most with Mediterranean views. Guests on lower floors may hear noise, as live entertainment goes till past midnight most evenings. All the rooms include dated-looking red-and-gold-striped bedspreads, curtains, and matching chairs. The furniture is heavy, dark, and dated, not beachy; apartment and outdoor balcony floors are linoleum-covered. Kitchenettes are too tiny for serious cooking, with a haphazard collection of cookware, and no tea kettles. Fridges are old and stained, and the bathroom also shows its age, with stained tiles and missing grout. Some rooms have Murphy beds.

Features

Pool, beach, sun, sand, and space

The Bajondillo Apartments are a gateway to the lovely Torremolinos beaches, with water sports galore, but the peaceful pool in the center of the complex and its surrounding lawn and gardens are an oasis of quiet and relaxation when the beach scene is too much (though lounge chairs can fill up). There is a coffee shop and cafe, as well as a poolside bar, and a disco/lounge where there is live entertainment each evening. A game room and a card and TV room are nice for rainy days. The apartments have a large laundry room available to guests.
